Can I solder wires directly to the back of the factory gauges instead of using the harness that plugs into the circuit board on the back of the gauge cluster? I will lose my directionals and other dash lights but I want to install custom gauges but keep the factory gauge housing.

Not a good idea. You will end up with a mess that is not serviceable by reasonable means and prone to unexplainable problems.

Check out http://www.florida50.com/1987-1993-instrument-clusters.htm for a custom gauge set that fits in the stock instrument panel space.

Wow those looks awesome but the $600+ price tag is a bit much. I'm not looking for show quality results here, just a simple gauge install.
