need help with heads?

i have a stock 289 heads on my 302.i have went to a mechining shop and they told me that my heads needed work he told me that i they need to hot tank it put new valves on it beacuse some wont seal port and polish it and put it back together he said it will cost 400 bucks!!! to do this
is there anyway that i could do any of this my self?

plz help me i need to reduce this price greatly and i am good with tools.

You could port and polish but it's not necessary. I doubt they were really going to anyway though for that low price.

no its low because they are doing my engine so they said they will do that to.
the thing is that i dont 400 more
where could i learn how to port and polish
and was there anything else i could do?

I wonder if they meant new valve seats? which must be done at the machine shop. The only way I see to save is to get the heads back unassembled (springs, retainers,valves), and assemble them. It probably won't save much but you could ask.
As far as porting, you are not going to gain alot on stock heads and could make it worse. Porting needs to be done with unassembled heads. You can use a rotary tool and grinding burrs and sanding discs but they cost money so it would probably defeat the purpose.

ok lets say i was going to trow away those heads and buy new ones i saw that they had the gt-40 heads would you recommend any heads for a 302?
could you suply me with some part # so i could look at them.

Look for a pair of used Windsor Jr's. I picked up a pair last year with 100 mi. on them for $600. I've seen them go for as little as $450 on eBay.

$400 is damn cheap for a port/polish job and new valves, seals, seats, guides and springs.
