i have a stock 289 heads on my 302.i have went to a mechining shop and they told me that my heads needed work he told me that i they need to hot tank it put new valves on it beacuse some wont seal port and polish it and put it back together he said it will cost 400 bucks!!! to do this
is there anyway that i could do any of this my self?

plz help me i need to reduce this price greatly and :bang: i am good with tools.

I wonder if they meant new valve seats? which must be done at the machine shop. The only way I see to save is to get the heads back unassembled (springs, retainers, valves), and assemble them. It probably won't save much but you could ask.
As far as porting, you are not going to gain alot on stock heads and could make it worse. Porting needs to be done with unassembled heads. You can use a rotary tool and grinding burrs and sanding discs but they cost money so it would probably defeat the purpose.
Sorry I can't give you better news.
