Do any of the electrical accessories (radio, wipers, A/C& heat fan present intermittent operation?
Yes - replace the ignition switch
Recall on Ford Ignition switches:

Some of the symptoms of ignition switch problems are things that don’t work or are intermittent like radio, turn signals, wipers or heater.

There was a FREE recall on Ford ignition switches. They overheat and sometimes catch fire. That burns up the steering column and sometimes the car interior. Since this is very old information, you may not be able to get the switch replaced for free anymore. The auto parts stores sell the switches for $13-$15.

Saleen0679 was nice enough to dig this up for us awhile back: Replace a 1979-1993 Ignition Switch Assembly

No, there aren't any flaky things going on with the radio, wipers or A/C & heater fan
Bypass the MSD (May Suddenly Die) box.

MSD wiring:

Instead of using the battery negative terminal, attach the heavy gauge black wire to the body ground point by the windshield washer filler.

The battery common ground is a 10 gauge pigtail with the computer ground attached to it.

i had a subuaru once (ya i know but the wife and car seats were happy)

very same problem.. it would be what the heck power just cliff dropped, bucked and would die or recover.....

easy to restart it...

turns out it was one of the ignition wires, in fact the factory had to get involved and they issued a tech bulletin because of our car

point being jrichker's idea would have tracked down our same scenario...

Maybe check your vacuum. Had my car randomly die because the pcv doesn't fit tight in the lower grommet.

Something loose allowing a lot of vacuum out suddenly can cause that to happen. It causes a major drop in fuel pressure.
