started about a month ago. My VW would get hardre and harder to put into first gear. SO much that I would have to let the clutch like 1/2 way out and then it grinding it self in. Now second is doing it a little. I check on a VW forum and they said it usually starts in the higher gears first. But those are mostly turbos that have a lot og torque up top. My isn't a turbo. Just a 2001 VW golf with a 5 speed. Now I am thinking it is the clutch but I don't want to drop like $200 on a new clutch and that not fix the problem. any takers on this. I would really appriciate it.

Might be the Syncros going bad in the Tranny, but I have owned tons of VWs and never had a Tranny Go Out. There are some Nylon Connectors that sit ontop of the Tranny that connect the shift rails together, maybe you have slop in one of those and it is making it hard to get in gear.

I had that problem on another vehicle. turns out the slave cylinder had come loose and was pulling away from the tranny. hope this helps
