Ill most likely be rebuilding my t-5 myself, My question is do I NEED a press to press on and off the new bearings? And do I need a press to take all the gears and synchro assemblies off the mainshaft? Thanks
You'll only need a special puller to get the input shaft bearing off and a press would be nice to press it off and then back on. All the other bearing just slide off the shafts. You wont need any pullers to get the gears off. They're all held on with snap rings or just slide on and off.
A press is very usefull at putting on the bearings that you are pulling off... You may be able to wing it with just a puller though. I just had a bad experience with the hanlon rebuild kit so I would suggest not getting it. The bearings between the input shaft and output shaft were soft and destroyed both shafts... It may have been just my kit but just a heads up. Turns out a lot of the caged bearings were also softer than the stock but not as soft as the roller bearings.

Along these lines, I also need to rebuild my T5... Problem is I believe my output shaft is from another year car that did not use the gear driven VSS like the 88 needs. The shaft has the gear on it, but its not splined and isn't held on with any type of clip like its supposed to be. I can get a new output shaft for $299, but I might also be able to find another tranny for this price also. Anyone know what year output shafts might be compatible with this tranny? Its a world class, so I would hate to toss it.. Seems most people say even the WC trannies are "junk"...

If you really want to know what you are getting in to, order the T5 rebuild video from Hanlon Motorsports. Very informative and gives you step by step instructions. They are about 20 bucks and well worth it if you've never taken a tranny apart before..
Well I was able to confirm that the tranny in my stang is indeed a 99 world class T5 from a V6. The internals looked fine except the synchro for 4th de bonded (The little friction like sandpaper inside the ring) and thus the reason for the 4th gear grind. Got a new synchro for free so that problem is done. Next up is the output shaft. Since its a 99, it has no hole for the clip that holds the speedo gear in place. This weekend I will be drilling the hole in the output shaft and I already picked up the clip for $2. Should be a fairly easy repair that will get me back on the road for now. Eventually when this T5 genades, I will upgrade to something else that can handle more power.
