need help with timing

for me it was easier to remove the air filter to position the timing light and my spout is under the air box and not in the fender

you dont have to pull out the fender. its on the bottom on the passneger side inthe engine bay. the color of it is gray and its a clip. just pull it out before you rotate the distributer.

1) As far as finding your spout goes, it sounds like you're hunting in the wrong place. Check the other threads on here, there's lots of posts with pics to help you find it, and its' not that hard to get to, certainly not requiring pulling a fender (unless someone's done some major rewiring).

2) As far as actually setting your timing, it is hard to read the numbers. A trick is to take white out or one of those Schucks touchup paint pens (especially if you've got a bright color, like YELLOW), and fill in the mark that you're trying to hit when you set your timing. I just did mine for the first time on this car a few weeks ago, and I had trouble getting a straight shot at the timing indicator (can't remember what was in the way, but I couldn't shoot straight down from the top, I was off at an angle just a little). I crawled under the car (where the timing marks were when I shut the engine off, also the easiest place to reach them), and painted in the 12 degrees mark. Then when I hit it with the gun, it was very obvious what I was aiming for. Wound up bumping it to 14 degrees, but that wasn't too hard to do once I had my reference mark highlighted.
