I have a loud ticking sound coming from the driver side of the engine. I used a stethoscope and i can hear it very good on the front top driverside of the front cover sounds like metal tapping metal. Speeds up with RPM's. I can also hear it in the 1st primary tube of the L/T headers, the thermostat housing and valve cover around cly #5. THe only thing that is confusing me is that i can also hear it int thefront of the oil pan. Anyone have any ideas.

Brief history: car has been sitting for 8 months due to having to go and kill some terrorist. I home on leave and i believe the valve seals are shot and I'm burinig oil very bad. Went low one day about 1 1/2 quarts left in pan.

Did you run it with 1 1/2 quarts in the pan? If so you might have damaged the valvetrain, causing the tick.

Another thing, probaly something to check just to get it out of the way is a leaking manifold. Bolts come loose, exhaust leaks sound like tapping sometimes. Id check the headers and make sure the bolts handt backed out a little bit.

You should have it towed to a shop mang... Sorry...

Sometimes ticking is a result of a loose plug getting ready to blow out of the head you could always check that but due to the other things you mention it don't sound good...

I retorqued the plugs and they were good. I tightened the headers as much as I could. There is a shop about 2 miles away think it will be safe to drive it there.

Is it a possible spun bearing?

Spun bearings are *normally* a knocking noise, usually pretty deep. If it sounds like its in the top of the motor, probaly is.

I am hoping it is in the top of the motor and not a spun bearing. It will giv me a good reason to get those vt heads and stage 2 cams.

Can anyone tell me what the rod bearing sound sould most sound like?

I think this problem may be the timing chain is slapping cause of a bad tensioner. I heard the ticking sound the best on the front cover. My car is currently at a ford dealership but I am in Iraq again and can't get any info on it except that it is there and they are waiting for the big guy to give the go ahead to work on it. I think they are just gathering up the lube in preperation to bend me over and tell me they are voiding my warrenty.

I hear the ticking sound in the front cover and not the oil pan so does that mean that it could be the chain?

I know its not the same motor, but same setup (as far as I know) for the chains and tensioners... but some of the older SOHC Explorer's were recalled because the tensioners wore out prematurley and would let the chain slacken up, and it would make some noise...

Well still no solution on what the ticking sound is. All I got out of the ford dealership was a now voided warrenty even tho they knew i had headers and intake before i paid $200 to have it towed to them and they said "no problem we will fix it under warrenty". If anybody has anyother thoughts on what this ticking could be please let me know, I come home in a few weeks and want to be ready to fix it. thanks

1 look under your hood............... At least ford can check
it out and get you an estimate before they start working on it.

the thing is is this dealer said the would fix it under warrenty even with the mods. Then once it got there and I went back to Iraq they decided to screw me. And eveybody knows that intake and headers arn't going to cause internal damage.
