This might be fun...

I am trying to decide on which direction to go for my engine in my 65 fastback.

For reference, I am using a TCP front and rear coilover and power rack and pinion, subframe connectors, and fab 9 rear with 3.25s and and a locker and will be a tko 600 tranny and the car is currently having the body and paint redone.

If this car was yours and you wanted to drive it as much as possible, what would be your ideal engine combo? 4 valve is out because I don't want to cut up the car so it has to be windsor based and fit under a gt350 hood. I want as much useable horsepower and torque as I can get and I would like to go efi if possible.

Thanks.

Id probably do a 331-347 higher compression in the 10:1 range. Low CC Victor Jr heads. Find a matching comp cam for it with a RPM dual plane intake and a 650 carb. Throw a AOD behind it or a t-5 with a gentle clutch..lol

But then what im willing to drive and what you are might be two different things. Your motor in your sig sounds awesome to me. Throw a AOD or a Good 5 spd behinde that.

Personally, I want McLeod to get off their ass with the new 5 Spd they are building..

well, too late on the tranny. already have a tko 600. the engine in the sig is in my 91 hatch. I built it when I was in college many moons ago. it was brutally fast for a street car back then. I actually drove it to work for the first year out of school. the stall on the tranny didnt like rush hour traffic much though and the motor likes to get a little hot. It is sleeping right now...maybe come alive again in the future but I want to get the 65 done first.

I want something wild but still drivable for the 65. Was planning on a Dart or Boss based motor with all the goodies for internals. I was thinking of converting it to efi and using a supercharger or turbo for drivability but am concerned about hood clearance.

Your 65 looks sweet too man. Any other ideas?

Another friend of mine had a 91 LX with a 331, some mild heads, holley intake, blower cam and a T-Trim with a 5 speed. It was his daily driver, and got decent mileage. Ran 10.70's i believe.

Thanks for the compliment, hoping, hoping hoping to fire my new motor up in a couple weeks. What a long journey.

I have been working on putting this thing together for about 4 months now. Pieced it together and purchased items as I could afford them. Here are some details.

Ford Racing Boss Block
Scat Forged H beam Rods and Forged Crank
Probe 14 cc dished pistons
Mahle Rings
Camshaft Innovations Custom grind Cam
TFS moly push rods
Comp Cams Magnum Rockers, Billet timing set and Roller lifters
Trick Flow Fast as Cast 190 heads with LSX springs and Ferrera 6000 vavles (worked by Jay Allen at Camshaft Innovations)
ARP bolts for EVERYTHING
Vortech V2SQ blower with smaller pulley to put out 11+ lbs of boost.
MSD 6AL igintion, BTM and coil.
Meziere 55 gph water pump
Snow Performance Stage 2 Water/Methanol Injection
Trick Flow Track Hear intake
60 lb injectors
Aeromotive A1000 pump
Wizard Cooling custom radiator with 4 9" fans (thin enough to clear blower puller and provide enough cooling)
AN fitting on almost everything

It is at the tuner right now and should have some specific numbers tomorrow with a little luck. I had 42 lb injectors in the car and it ran lean so they are bumping me up tomorrow to 60/65 lb injectors. The tuner said I should easily have 520 rwhp and likely 550+ rwhp on a pretty conservative tune.

that looks like a very nice combo. Are you going FAST type engine management or mass air?

Does anyone know if the track heat intake will fit under a gt350 hood in a 65? This is where I am running into the majority of my problems. I really hate the idea of buying a ported cobra or gt40 intake because for the cost, you can buy SO much better of a untouched efi intake (tfs, edelbrock, holley).

I am not really concerned about the cost but I also don't want to piss away money either.

high enough to not be too concerned about cost (since I will probably have this car for the rest of my life) but at the same time I don't want to make stupid purchases or blow money for no reason.

so basically just getting ideas and using everyone elses heads to supliment mine.

I am running a Ford mass air computer with SCT chip. The tuner feels I am good with the ford unit until you hit about 700 hp then think about an upgrade. My combo fits under my stock 68 hood. I do have Ron Morris lowering motor mounts so that I could fit a T56 6 speed without cutting the trans tunnel.

Before I had the lowering mounts (old engine) I used a Performance Product Typhoon intake (EDDY RPM clone) and it barely fit. There was a screw on the top of the throttle body that barely touched the hood when the engine touched. Not enough to dent but enough to rub the paint. It looks like the TH intake may have a little more space but I am not sure. There are quite a few guys running EFI with stock hoods and I dont' think I have heard any complaints of clearance issues.

Wheels. The other guy at the shop, who does most of the race car tuning, has a 5.0 mustang that is a combo dd and drag car. He has about 700 at the wheels and uses the stock computer with an SCT chip. He told me it was working fine for him. He has a pretty big turbo on his car.

IMO this is simple. 408W stroker motor. Moderate cam with slight lope that pulls to 6500 rpm. You do NOT want a 3500-7500 rpm motor with 3.25 rear gears. In fact with a TKO and its overdrive you really don't want 3.25 gears anyway - something more like 3.75.

Personally I don't see the cost/benefit of EFI. Sure it starts easier and idles better but doesn't make significant differences in power versus a simple carb setup. With a solid 408W you are going to make more power than you can put the ground and still be very streetable and can probably put together for less than $8K.

If you are really dreaming about 600+ HP out of a small block keep in mind that HP costs money and big HP costs LOTS of money.

Yeah I have thought that I might have screwed up on the gearing but I had quite a different plan for the car when I bought the rear. I am going to try the 3.25s when I get it going an see... and if I need to change them I will. It stinks but it happens.

As far as spending the money to go fast, this ain't the first time I have done this. Let's just simply say that I can afford it...whatever it is. I just don't want to piss away money if its not worth it. Totally awesome is worth it to me.

Id do either a 347 or a 408. Personally I'd do the 347 just for the weight on the front aspect of things as a street car. 10-1 or 11-1 compression will be fine on pump gas with the proper cam.

X2 on the gears and the rpm range. You have overdrive, so I'd probably run 3.89 at a minimum. At least your starting with the good parts like the dart block etc etc. I wouldn't do the Boss block myself, if anything do the Dart SHP.

I picked my car up from the tuner and id had 554.62 rwhp and 486.64 rwtq. max power at about 6200 rpm and max torque about 4000. 400 ft lb and over from 3000 rpm. It is hard to beat the feeling of boost. N/A is a smarter way to build if you don't want to deal with little problems like oil leaks though.

I run a 408 in my 67 vert, its fun but when i do it again I will run a twin turbo 5.0 or maybe 331, you can make easily 500 hp with a stock/mild cammed 5.0 with good heads and idle smooth and get excellent fuel economy, with a warm 331-347 I've seen 700hp without too much trouble but an aftermarket block would be in the mix. you can run two turbos off t-bird turbo coupes which are perfect size for a 5.0.

I like the stealth effect of a stock sounding 5.0 pushing 500+hp and getting 25+ mpgs on the hwy, my 408 has some lope and sound, a mild cammed 393/408 would work too.

In a 65 the 5.0 based engine just fits nicer, you can go about 365 cubes with a world block, check this car out......1966 Ford Mustang Fastback - Featured Vehicles - Hot Rod Magazine
