We found a 69 mustang to restore but when i run the VIN through the decoder it comes back as a I6 but the car has a 8 in it. the car is over 100 miles away and the owner sounds like a no BS person and is unsure of what motor is in it but thinks its a 351, we know it has a holley street avenger 770 on it. He bought it 5 years ago to restore but lost interest in the past 3. the interior has already been redone in a 2 tone silver, floor pans,gas tank,trunk pan,rear quarters, and door skins have already been done and the car runs and drives. I picked it up for what i think is a good deal the car delivered ran me 2K. I'm going to post the pictures from the emails and would like any feedback on what motor this looks like and if I got shafted on the deal, thanks

Looks hard to tell of what motor it is from the pic. It might say on the manifold but it looks aftermarket to me so might not. Otherwise take a look at the block on the starter side underneath back by the bellhousing. There should be the block casting number. Obviously this is not the original motor if the VIN is comming up a straight 6. So type your casting number into google or ask here and you will be able to tell what it came from, the year, and the size(351, 302, 289).

From what I see in the pics I don't think you got shafted at all. That's a bada$$ looking car! If I would have seen that for 2grand I would have snagged it in a instant.

I figured thats what i would end up having to do, the guy that has it is 62 so he's not up to tryin to find the casting number. It should make for a good project anyway. At least its an 8 and not a 6. the only issue i can see is that its an automatic, and thats ok for now my other half cant drive a stick. but I have it planned to swap it for a 4 or 5 speed.

I don't think it's a 351. I'm guessing 289 or 302. I don't see the adapter for the alternator that a 351W would require. 69s only got 8" or 9" rearends. Even the I6s. 2K delivered sounds like a good deal to me.

Check the firing order.... Ford Windsor (289, 302, 5.0, 5.0HO, 351) Firing Order & Cylinder numbers

I'm going out to look over the car today so i'll check the firing order and see if there is a casting number. does anyone know of a site that I would be able to figure out the casting number? I got the numbers off the door plate and the color came back as new lime, the interior was a kiwi gold, I cant say as I've seen the new lime color but I think the kiwi gold color came out in my sons diaper once.

It was quite dark when we got to where the car is, all I could find for numbers was 289 stamped on the intake. thats fine with me, at least its not the inline 6. I was able to talk the owner down to 1500 delivered because he was unsure where the tail lights, the cowl behind the hood, hood scoop, and other odds and ends were. along with the passenger door sitting inset about 1/8". Easy fixes though. the car started right up and sounded like it had a small cam, might be due to being open headers with no exhaust to speak of. he hit the gas a few times and after that it wanted to die, not sure if I should clean the 770 thats on it or just go with a smaller carb. a 289 with a 770 holley is a bit much.
