Need some good advice on buying a classic Stang

I have been seriously looking at buying a classic Mustang, as it is in all honesty my dream car. Even though I don't plan on purchasing one for about another year or two, I would like to be well informed when the time comes. My predicament is that I would love to have the big block 429, but there is absolutely no way I could afford a Boss 9 that is in good enough condition to be used as a non-winter daily driver. While looking on eBay I came accross this:

69 Mustang with 429 CJ

It looks to be exactly what I want: A regular Mustang with the 429 CJ put in it. There is even a second one that is basically the same (except with the Thunder Jet) also being sold on eBay.

I really have three questions:

1) What would be a good deal on such a car?
2) How much would it cost to buy & install a posi setup?
3) How common are cars like these? I ask this mainly because I don't plan on buying one now, and even though I have no problem looking around for a car, I really don't want to be looking for something that's extremely hard to find.

They are only going to get more expensive/rare. When I was buying my 67, I saw a Mach1 SCJ similar too that(in better condition) going for 29,500. That was a little high, but that was 4 years ago. 6700 is a great deal, if it is what the seller says it is.

Thanks. Any idea how much it would cost to put posi on it? And I forgot one major thing, how much is insurance going to run on a car like that? I'll be 19 in a week with no points on my license. ballpark estimates on these two prices would be just fine.

I am not sure about posi, I think a 3rd member can be had for around $300 from a junkyard.

Insurance is going to be high no matter what. You're male(I assume...); you're young; and you have a sports car. I'm in the same boat. I would expect it to run well over 1500 per year. Its a "fact" that young guys with fast cars drive like lunatics

Maybe true, but the scariest (and stupidest) driving experience I've ever had was trying to keep up (I didn't know the way at all) with 4 girls in a focus on a busy highway into Detroit going to watch my HS soccer team play in the state finals. They were basket weaving at 90-100mph, and when a cop sees 4 girls in a focus, and 2 18 year old males in an '04 Sonic Blue Mustang GT, who is the one going to get smoked? Sigh. Cop will probably assume I was chasing them, "forcing" them to go that fast. (A similar thing has happened to me, but that is a different story entirely.)

You may be wondering why I'm buying a classic sub-10K stang to use as a daily driver when I have an '04 GT. Well, it was a company lease with built in insurance, and now my sister is going to be able to drive, so I am on my own. And as I am a die-hard Mustang boy, the classic Stang seemed like the way to go. Once I redo the interior, throw some nice Magnum 500s on it with some nice fat tires on the rear, I will be in heaven. And possibly a paintjob, I've always loved that Calypso Coral.

As for tires/wheels. I was thinking of putting 275/50/15s (or should I go 275/60/15s?) on 15x10 Mag 500s on the rear, and 245/50/15s on 15x8 Mag 500s on the front. Would this pose any problems?

Sorry, but these cars are not sports cars. Anything more than 2 seats isn't. Male and young....Cha-Ching. I have a bone stock 67 C code and it is the slowest car in town. They were not fast then, or now. Not counting anything that startes with a S or a B.

sorry u had to give up that sonic blue man. That is my favorite color and when I get around to painting my 66 i can tell you it will be the sweetest sonic blue ever. On another note, did you ever tihnk of buying/leasing a new 05 Mustan GT. You can get the retro styling and an overall badass instant classic.

Yes, my Sonic Blue GT with black leather and the shiney 5 spokes was absolutely gorgeous. I wish I hadn't had to give it up, but it was great while it lasted.

Leasing to buy an '06 GT is definately an option I am considering, but I am afraid that between the lease payments and the high insurance costs, it will be more than a full-time student can handle. But all the questions on going the '06 route are directed to my dad.

Also, I am figuring that if I do get a Stang like this, clean it up and redo/fix at least some of the interior, and then decide that I want a newer car, I could always sell it for at least what I got it for, no harm done.

golf, how easy was it to put that 8.8 w/POSI on your '66, and how much did it run you?

really? Hmm. I'm actually thinking now I'm going to wait a year or two and buy an '03 Mach 1. Prices seem to be getting very reasonable on those now, and I just love them.

golf, I would also like to hear the story on your 8.8 as I am planning the very same swap in the near future....BTW, how can you afford U of M tuition, an 04GT, and still be looking at a classic 429 or 06 GT...whatever you do for a living is paying off

The '04 GT was company lease with integrated insurance (price is fixed, regardless of my age, ect.), that is how I afforded that. U of M tuition: I am instate w/scholarships, and my dad, much to my appreciation, covers the rest of the tuition. As for a classic 429, I'm looking for a reg. 69-70 mustang in average condition with a 429 dropped in it, as there is no way I could afford to buy an origional 429 car as it would need to be around 10K. As for an '06 GT, well, that would only be feasable if I were to get the base GT, work during school and summer (which I intend to do anyways) and get an A plan lease through my father with the intent of taking a loan and buying the car when the lease is up. Actually, I am seriously looking into taking a loan and purchasing an '03 Mach 1 this coming summer, which again would take most of my income, but as cars are my love, it is more than worth it to me.

It's a "sports car" in that it goes fast --to the insurance companies that's all that matters
