well, you said cyl #8 was flooded...any others? it could be a stuck injector like someone said...or a short in the wiring harness keeping it open. hows your fuel pressure? check your vacuum hoses? especially on the regulator. im gonna hit the sack but ill be back tomorrow (unemployment sucks lol)

#8 Has been the only one so far...I'll check the others again tomm....fuel pressure is good (about 36 with hose off) and vaccum hoses are good. I'm stumped...Thanks for the help

alright...so youve got a problem with #8 cylinder. it could be:
low compression - check it
leaking plug wire
cracked plug
stuck open injector
or wiring problem with injector

i cant see how youd have a valvetrain problem since none of the other cylinders are affected. so either you have too much fuel, not enough compression, or not enough spark, since it is flooding out.

#5 is also not firing...could there be something wrong with the distributor?

Good call. I would start by swapping plugs and then wires with another cylinder, this would rule out a bad plug or wire. Then I would swap injectors with another cylinder to rule out the injector.

Absolutely do a compression check. From what you have said about it running good sometimes, I doubt that's the problem, but it's always good to know what kind of condition your engine is in.

After you do that stuff, we'll have a lot more to go on.

Well, I don't think its a plug or wire b/c I put on 2 different new sets....I tested the #8 injector with a 9 volt battery and 2 wires....it clicked everytime I touched it...Compression check will have to wait a little bit b/c I don't have a tester and this is my only car so I can't drive anywhere (until people get off of work later). Any other ideas?

I would still recommend swapping injectors with another cylinder. Just because it's clicking doesn't necessarily mean it's working right. Also, you mentioned it doesn't always have the problem, so maybe it's working right now but will fail again later.

I know it's a pain in the ass to pull the upper intake to swap injectors, but it would rule out the injector for certain.

Yea, I dunno what to do. I swapped the injectors around and it did the same. I haven't pulled the plugs out yet to see which cylinder is messing up....i wanna keep the skin on my hands and not melted on my headers, ha

It's possible it's your distributor cap. Do you have a spare you can try?

You could maybe get creative and turn the distributor cap 180 degrees and put the wires back on in the correct order, and see if the same cylinders are missing. I don't know if that made sense or not...

you can try a new cap, but you cant ever turn a cap. theyre keyed to the distributor adapter.

It has a new cap on it....I just put a new distributor in it.....started up and idled smooth and no smoke or raw gas smell....but it was idling at about 1000-1050.....I may have the dist a tooth off. Hopefully this is the problem

yeah check the timing. mine wouldnt even run and it was a tooth retarded. acted like it was too rich, but that was most or all cylinders (i think). the high idle doesnt mean you have it off, though. that could be just cold idle, or theres a vacuum leak, or cuz you had the battery disconnected.

Dammit, I don't know....its still doing the same thing....I set the timing (but I noticed that the tfi module isn't as far turned to the left as it was when I had the old dist in it). I don't know what to do. I guess tomm I'll see if its at tdc and everything. Or maybe just sell it. I'm to poor for all of this and this being my only car

If you have room to physically spin the dizzy (to get the car in time), you're not a tooth off.

Good luck.

Swapped ECU's with a buddy of mine....car is running ALOT better....I'm still noticing a little smoke from the drivers side exhaust and an odd smell, but maybe its all the excess in the cylinder that wasn't firing? I'm gonna put some new plugs in it again and see what happens
