The turbo on my 86 TC has the oil line disconnected, so I assume it is toast.

What are the options for fixing one of these? Can you replace the bearings and seals, or do you have to replace the whole unit with a rebuilt?

What makle or model turbo should this thing have?

Thanks, I will get a book soon, but I am rounding up info on it until I get there.

Last month's 5.0 Mag (I think, it may have been MM&FF) has an article on rebuilding the factory turbos. IIRC they got a rebuild kit on Ebay that had all the bolts and gaskets needed. Might be in the tech section on one of their respective websites.

EDIT: If you can't find it, let me know and I can scan it and pm it to you.

should have a little IHI turbo...it might be cheaper to just upgrade to a garret t-3 off a turbo coupe or so they should make a couple extra hp. parts are cheap and easy to find....and it uses the same manifold.

The '86 came with the larger T3 turbo. Look it over. IHI's had IHI stamped on the turbo and only came on '87-'88 TC's. Towards the bottom of your compressor housing should be stamped either AR 63 or AR 60. The AR 63 would be the larger turbo. I believe they came on '83-'86 TC's. The smaller T3 came on XR4ti's.

Rebuild kits are available................................

but it would probably be worth your while to just buy a used T3 off of Ebay or Turboford.net.

Thanks. I looked for that article for an hour Sunday and could not find it. I will look again!

Did not work on the beast yesterday. This may go on hold. Several other demons are threatening.

Trying to get my old Waverunner tuned up and ready to sell. I hate working on old, aluminum engines.....If you drop stainless bolts, you cannot get them back with a magnet.....

Runs great, but needs the head cover gasket.
