After a LONG hiatus from racing at the SSOTN events I attended one yesterday with results that have me shaking my head in disbelief and amazement still today. For those that may not know or remember I over-rev'd my car at the Spring 2005 SSOTN nationals and bent all of my exhaust valves after running a 12.03 at 112.5mph with the stock shortblock, AFR 165's, an FTI cam, and an Edelbrock performer intake. I spent 2yrs assembling parts and pieces for my new low compression 331ci shortblock and I bought a turbo kit. I haven't put the turbo on yet as I wanted to ring this thing out NA first. Now that I have done so I may sell the turbo kit and not even put it on but rather take the money from selling it and make my NA combo better.

I've been chasing the 11's for a long time and yesterday was my day!

My new combo is a 9:1 compression dart block 331 with new AFR 185 competition heads, my old FTI custom cam that was designed for my stock shortblock combo, a TMOSS ported Holley systemax intake, and all of the normal bolt-ons. Race weight checked in at ~3430lbs with me. Here's how my day went:

1st pass: 11.709 at 119.35 with a 1.668 60' (I came with a goal of 11.8 at 118, so I was excited when I blew it away on my first pass)

2nd pass: 11.714 at 121mph with a 1.82 60'

3rd pass: 11.53 at 120.33mph with a 1.64 60'

4th pass: 12.304 at 117.31 with a 1.804 60' (the clutch slipped on the launch)

5th pass: 11.505 at 120.96 with a 1.620 60'

6th pass: 11.60 at 120.62 with a 1.702 60' (hot lap)

7th pass: 11.760 at 119.08 with a 1.754 60' (clutch was letting go again)

To say I'm happy is an understatement. I never thought this NA low compression 331 would be capable of these times at my weight. I also can't believe the ~27mph top end pull this combo has on just about every pass too! I can't help but wonder what a cam designed for the engine would do along with more compression and possible 363ci. It had me up all night thinking about it...

Thanks again to Chris and Troy for taking the videos and pictures of my car, thanks to my buddy Mike for loaning me his centerline wheels and ET streets, and lastly thanks to Jason at AFR, Rick at RNH Performance, and Ed Curtis for the "little cam that could."

Here's a video I whipped up at 3am last night of my best runs:

It's going to be rediculous with the turbo. Glad to know how well those heads worked out too. I'll definitely be putting those on the list (now that the whole engagement ring is out of the way)

I bet that 11 to 1 compression 364 sounds pretty good right now.

Congratulations Paul! Even if you set it up for N/A, you will still be at the same "level" you are now. Going turbo will put you up at the next tier of street cars, in my opinion. Stay the course!

Which Edelbrock intake were you using? I have the performer 5.0 and was looking at upgrading.

Nice numbers!

Wow, that's awesome, man! I really enjoyed reading the 5.0 MM story about your process.

How much have you stripped from the stock 'vert weight?

Put the turbo on...you can always turn down the boost with a controller. Granted its a manual so launching under boost will probably suck but damn...for a turbo motor not running the turbo and a cam not designed for the combo. That is damn good.

Nice 60's too.

I think you got rusty not racing all that time.

LOL JK damn nice numbers. I'm happy for you that you got back to this point. I think you should throw the turbo on too. See what that sucker can do forced.

Congrats

Damn man, that thing really takes off! I can't believe this is all with such a low compression motor and a mismatched cam. I would venture to say that MPH is good for somewhere between 11.00 and 10.90 and I can't wait to see you get there! I think it would be awesome to see you break into the 10's first before you put the turbo on!

Congrats Paul. It seems that I have read about your car setting new bars for some time now. You must have a few secrets up your sleeve to get a vert flying!
