i have a quick question for you all. I have a squeaky belt, found out that it is the bearing in the alternator, and the alternator is also old. I think it is time for a new one. I have an elextric fan, tack and shift light and cd player and all so it will need to be able to power all that and such, but i dont think i need some off the wall one or anything. I would like to know what one i should get that will do the right job. I am welcome to any opinions. Thanks guys...

dude, my bet is a stock alt will work just fine.... when you go to buy one just get the largest stock size available.... my 70 had a 60 amp.......

I really REALLY don't think that a stock alternator can handle what you are asking of it. I've had very bad experiences with the stock alternators caused by my little stereo that probably draws on average about what your electric fan does. I finally got sick of dealing with the charging problems and ordered myself a 100 amp one wire Powermaster from summitracing.com, it was around 140 shipped to my door, and if that is more than you are looking to spend you can always get a 3G alternator from a 94-95 GT I believe from Vatozone or Pepboys. I believe that is a direct bolt in, and a one wire hook up as well

Yea, I'd have to say go bigger myself. If your going to spend money on a new one alt, might as well get one that can support any future upgrades you may want- put in an amp or an electric fuel pump or somethin. Better safe than sorry for an extra $50

i beg to differ friends, man i been gone for a while wheres all the good ol boys.???

a cd player draws little, a tack and shift light draws about as much as your dash lights... a electric fan does draw a bit but a stock 60 amp alt is plenty...... if you want more power do it and thats acceptable but right now you dont need it....... big draw comes from large amps and extra driving lights...

That's ok, beg to differ all you wish, however speaking from experience you do not want to lean on the stock alternators too hard, they do not like it. Before I bought the powermaster I went through three alternators in a matter of 18 months, and they love to go out with other components such as your starter, the regulator, points, coils, I even had an alternator burn through a splice on the charge wire when it was on its last legs once

Anyways back to the topic at hand, here is a short timeline of my CHARGING PROBLEMS (OMG It must have been something else!!!1!!11!)

Several years ago I bought my mustang, shortly after I installed a stereo. Within a few months my alternator was dead, oh well it was probably on it's way out anyways, replace the alternator and regulator with rebuilt units. Soon I begin having issues with my car running rough, crap my points are fried, oh well they will do that, same deal with the points. A couple weeks later now my starter is on it's way out, same deal as before and once again I'm on my merry way, when suddenly OH NO my alternator is going out AGAIN!!!

Repeat this cycle several times over the following year, points were the most frequent objects to go out, starter twice, coil once, regulator was replaced four times and my alternator was replaced thrice. I also managed to go through two batteries, finally I said screw it I'm done with this, I had just quit my job and did not have any money to be replacing electrical parts on my car anymore so I went out and completely took out the stereo. Since then I had the points go out on me once again, and the starter also died (these were within weeks of removing the stereo) and nothing else has died on me.

So I could either take YOUR word for it and assume that I just ran into a very rugged set of rebuilt units... or I could connect the dots and just say that, it probably was the undercharging that was causing my problems.

No thanks I don't want to relive that, I remember all of your issues fine, from your propane truck to your neighbors that were getting pissy cause you were parking on the streets, to you doing a burnout to piss them off and then busting your cam (Longest cam swap ever btw) AGAIN in the process.

I don't remember what caused your car to ignite but I do remember it happening

well i never really had electrical problems with my car, it was my truck that caught on fire under the dash.......

but honestly here, i think all your problems are a mere coinscedence, i hate to break the news to ya but not every vehicle out there with a aftermarket cd payer and electric fan has a upgraded alternature just ponder on that........

i am gonna get off this subject its turning into a battle of wits and from what i see you my friend are very undergunned

Like I said earlier, if you really want to believe that for a timespan of 6 months I recieved a grip of the worlds poorest poorest quality parts known to man then yeah I would agree that it may have just been a coincedence. However don't you think it may be just a little (just a tiny bit) strange how since removing the drain on the system I had zero issues? That seems like one hell of a coincedence to me, I guess I could just have ignored it and blamed it on my own curse and then everything would have been better

My final verdict would be...
If your keeping it as is a 60 or 70 should be fine
If your getting a bigger, more powerful stereo system, go with the 100 or more. I know for a fact that a 70 will not keep up with an amp, capacitator or not.

What about the GT direct fit?

What abou the drop in from the early to middle 90's GT that someone mentioned? I;m having this problem too and want a higher power alternator, but don't want a chromed up one.
