New Buffer 101?

Greetings,
A friend of mine got a new high-speed buffer for Christmas.
Although Ihave not seen it, I do know that you have to be VERY careful with it as not to "burn" the paint off your car if you don't have correctly angled.

I am far from body shop man myself, but are there any tips any of you could provide that would be helpful to a couple of "Buffer Wannabees"?

The main things are to stay away from wool pads, stick with foam. Also stick with milder compounds. It is better to have to go over the area a couple of times with a milder compound than it would be to use a more abrassive compound and go through the clear. Also stick with lower speeds say under 1500. Also use painters tape to cover high spots and gaps as those are the areas most likely to get damaged first. Keep the buffer moving, staying in one spot too long generates heat. Just take your time and don't rush it. It might even be wise to go to a body shop and ask them if they have any old panels you can have to practice on.

Porter Cable makes (among others) a duel polisher. It is made to be idiot proof. That is why I bought one. It works great and it is very simple to use. Go to meguires.com and click the video tutorials. they are very helpful and shows you a good demo of the duel polisher.

it also depends on how fast it spins and if it is a dual action orbital buffer. If it is a dual action and it is specifically made for car buffing and polishing you do not have much to worry about, just keep it moving and do not stay in one place.
