BTW... for the record....

the 8.5's it ran was with....

stock 5.4 3v no tune. stock automatic. full weight, no reductions. 3.90 gears.

the motor was not built, no pullies. it had a modded intake manifold. nothing else.

the car weighed 3360 without me. 3610 with me in it.

stock 5.4 3v
stock auto
stock converter
3.90 gears
hit rev limter on 2-3 shift nosing over every run. because there was no tune.
stock suspension.

never ran it tunes or weight reduced.

remove all the weight from reductions, a tune, good exhaust.....you figure it out.

here are the pics of the 4.6 3v in the garage. it is about 1/2-3/4" too high to fit under the hood. ill figure out a hood to buy that's discrete. and paint it this time.

you can see the turbo im gonna use for this motor in the background.

this is just my 'temporary' motor till the big one is done. 450-480rwhp is not really that much. it will do for now.

8.2 is moving for an NA 2v 4.6. Plus, you have a sweet looking ride un top of it being fast.

Never put it past Bill to bring up a thread from its grave.

Nice "temporary" motor.

this thread was never dead. i just hadn't posted anything in it for a bit.

considering a turbo cam. but im not sure what the point would be. i have ceramic coated shorty's for this. im going to make adapter plates for the 4.6 2v headers to bolt to this. its really a quicky project for better efficiency than a 4v. 3v is actually better part throttle than 4v for mileage. i cant tune the 4v to run as lean as the 3v im going to use.

You change motors alot..

I really dont understand why your going to get rid of your 4v setup to go to a 3v 4.6

the 3v is temporary. i want serious power now. im not confortable with the non-forged crank i am using or the mahle pistons.

i change a lot because this is my hobby. i am liable to use any particular motor ONLY till i get bored and change it.

its not about money, its about fun. you guys have watched the kind of money ive put into this thing. it will be a LOT more before im satisfied. its a search. im headed down the final road i think. a 9" rear end and supporting chasis mods should set the stage for the final version.

crap i was temped to build a big block, but the same reason i took the 5.4 3v out.....gas mileage stopped me. ive got the foundation for the kind of power i really want. ported 4v heads, teksid block, cobra crank, and the rest after i finish the 4.6 3v turbo.

i will admit im tempted to build a 5.4 B head 4v with an intake like the one i am making for the 4.6 4v.

we'll see. i never know what kind of mood i'll be in next year.

this is the turbo im using for the 4.6 3v. its a gt3788va. its out of a low mileage duramax. the gt3788va and the gt3782va share the same internals and exhaust wheels. i purchased a parts gt3782va from a powerjoke and used the exhaust housing with some minor machine work.

the vnt defaults to .90 a/r when no signal reaches the solenoid. i clocked it a little so the a/r is a bit less. maybe .88 - .85 hard to say exactly.

its a water cooled chra, so its more suitable for gasoline than other diesel turbos. its a high pressure ratio turbo. the exhaust wheel on all gt37va's are the same.

the specs are:
compressor: 62mm inducer/88mm exducer .58 a/r
tuebine : 72.5mm 78 trim .90a/r

flows about 58 lb/min at 10psi just about 570hp at 10 psi. the 450-480 rwhp in the 4.6 3v will not push this turbo very hard. its a good match on efficiency. and being water cooled helps it to live with gasoline.

that stainless plate is for mounting it to the motor. some welding left for that.

the powerstroke housing is used the make the installation more typical. no need to figure out how to use the duramax part.

58lb/min turbo should max at 580hp crank generally.

that depends on VE and bsfc. those two factors in the equation affect HP from air volume directly. 4,6 3v VE is not as high as 4v.

no progress besides changing the turbo parts to suit my needs and machining a turbo mounting plate. ill get started on the other stuff next week. im moving the oil return fitting to a better location than it is now. it gets blocked by oil on hard braking now. im buying a new oil pan and windage tray for this motor. im in no hurry really. i do need to be done by march 29. its just a motor swap. tune should be similar. less boost in the tune. less timing for the 3v CR. probably richen it a tiny bit for safety measure.

ordered the oil pan, pick-up, canton windage tray, water pump, throttle body, iac.

made the header adapter plates to bolt up the 96-04 ceramic shorties i got bought.

when the throttle body gets here im going to tig weld it to the 1" thick 05 3v spacer i bought. going to mod the intake by removing the space between the throttle bores. going to tig weld and drill the 1" throttle adapter for the iac mounting plate i made.
