Hey all, I'm new to the site and the mustang world. I've removed the air intake silencer...are there any other "freemods" or cheapies that I can do to my car until I get a job? Thanks for any help in advance.

depends on how you define cheap. You can pick up a K&N filter on ebay for $20 or so, pick up a Densecharger MAF to TB pipe for $60 or so and that should be ok for your intake for now. Also on the less expensive side, you can buy 2 flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers on Ebay for $106 shipped, take it to a decent local exhaust shop and have them welded on for $60-$100 (call around for best price, mine was $65 at Meineke). An Off-road pipe is ~$150 and can be installed yourself. UD pullies are $150 but you need to rent a few tools for the install. Timing adjuster is probably another $150, installs easily.
Thats really about it, anything more than that requires >$200.

if you're really a poor kid, you should wait on the modifications for a little bit...
just to get used to the car as it is right now...
then when you do get mods, you'll love each one of them

Yell Vtec when you shift. j/k
There really arent any free mods to speak of except removing the rear seat and things like that.
I guess as some other have said what do you define as cheap. There quite a few under $200 mods for the stangs. That is pretty cheap when dealing with performance items.
Really cheap would be a K&N and thats about it imo.

yeah but with install plus a speedcal your looking at $400, which is quite a bit for someone who is broke
Don't screw with CAI's, they're all If you really have to, just put a K&N in there. I still have the stock paper filter.
As for racing at the track free mods: take out the front swaybar, passenger headlight, rear seats, passenger seat, spare tire and jack. Good amount of simple weight reduction, and you'll get better weight transfer without the front swaybar.

Thanks for all your replies guys. Cheap would be like $80-150 max. I like the idea of the flowmaster tips instead of a whole new exhaust system, I'm looking for the thing to sound mean and then I'll beef it up a little later..I do agree with driving the car stock for a while to get a feel for it. Thanks all for starting me on my way!

1) Springs/ Shocks -- while this is certainly not a "cheap" mod, per se ... HOWEVER you can get the Mach 1 spring/shock combo for VERRRRY cheap that would provide a substantial handling improvement while lowering the car from its ridiculously high stock perch. Do some searches if interested, there are a million threads on this one.
2) Mach 1 grill delete and chin spoiler -- each one runs about $60 or so. You will be surprised how much better car looks with both of these.
3) New shifter -- These run about $150 or so (I believe) and are a HUGE improvement over stock.
4) White-faced gauges -- Many people pick these up off eBay for about $25. The install is also fairly easy. There are tons of threads on gauges, too.
Then save up and get a Magnaflow catback ...

Get a stall converter, shift kit, and gears!! You will see a BIG TIME difference!! They are not "cheap" mods really (You can get each for around $200) but you get the most bang for your buck with them!ACSPONY said:My car's auto....

Best bang for the buck for pre 99 is the PI intake swap
PI Intake = 150 NEW from www.speedconcepts.net.
Than maybe another 40 -50 bucks for gaskets, heater tube, alternator bracket, thermostat O-ring and some RTV. You should net around 15- 20 hp from the swap.
