Have any of you guys seen the article's in the MM&FF about Don Bowles race car with a ford expiremental test engine? He's going 9.00's in the 1/4 with a new ford engine N/A! The magazine says it's a pushrod motor that has around 427ci but if you look closely at the pics it's clearly a OHC motor. I have read a few things on the internet that said this is a OHC very similar to a modular but with a larger bore spacing so that they could stretch ci limit.

If ford actually builds this engine and puts it in mustangs ford could finally have a serious contender for the LSx and chrysler hemi's. I just hope that the engine makes it to the market without ford seriously fouling this one up like they did the mod's.

I'll try to find a good link to some pics and more information and post it up.

pushrod or OHC, i dont care, I just hope ford puts out something to compete with the LSx series motors that can compete N/A as well as forced induction

Here's a video of Jack Roush and Don Bowles talking about the car. It has plenty of good shots of the engine in it.

That's it. Everything I read says that it's one of the new Boss engines. I read somewhere that ford sent roush a block and heads and they built the rest. I have also read that the engine has a 4.56 bore spacing and a 9.4" tall deck which is shorter than a 5.4 deck. So that means the engine is longer and narrower than the 5.4.

Sure looks like it has chain covers on front of both heads which would be OHC.

Its the new hurricane (old name pre katrina) program. 6L+ modular motors for if I am correct 10' production or the new mustang/trucks.

My thinking is that since the 4.6 desing was supposed to be like the FWD caddy motors at some point but never happend ford finaly decided to step things up a notch.

The sick thing is...
that race car was SLOWER with the race GT (supercar GT) motor setup...and that new motor is N/A

I am really excited about the new motors from Ford. NA Monsters. Ford needs this. With GM and their big LSx motors and Mopar with their 6.1 and bigger Hemis, Fords biggest current offering, the 5.4, is the underdog, IMO.

Sick.

I still think a properly cammed and tuned 32V DOHC 5.4, even in NA form, would SCREAM, but who the F wants to change out 4 cams?

I'm excited about this, I hope its as efficient as the LSx engines. I wouldn't mind knocking down 500 horse and get 30mpg on a stock tune.

Is the air intake through the firewall??

The hurricane family engine's were renamed as the Boss family of engines now. The new engines should have multiple displacement similar to the hemi's and some gm's.

It is clearly a OHC engine. It has a front cam cover and a deep valley where a OHV cam usually sits. I have read these engines will first be released in the F150 as a 6.2 with 400+hp in 2010 and then make their way into the mustangs around 2011.

If you look closely there is a K&N style panel filter at the back of the box up against the firewall. I'm not sure exactly where it get it's air from.

I agree that a N/A 4v 5.4 has some potential but with ford never releasing a N/A version in a mustang kind of hurt the market for good parts for them even though parts are being released for them now.

I also hear that a N/A version of the 4V 5.4 GT500 engine might be in a special edition mustang soon.
