well im picking up a set of edelbrock performers(i believe) with 1.72 rockers for 500 bucks tomorrow. im not gonna put them on immediately because i want to make sure i get everything that im going to need. so i have a few questions. im gonna be doing this right also, gonna clean the hell out of the bolt holes, use arp assembly lube....basically, im not gonna half ass this job like i have done with the rest of my car.

1) can cometic (MLS) head gaskets be reused or am i better off just buying new ones?

2) what length pushrods should i look for? i know i should measure, and i might, i just need to know a ball park number.

3) are ARP head bolts torque to yield or can they be reused?

ps. im so damn excited, ive waited years for a deal like this to come along and this just fell in my lap today. its gonna make one hell of a difference from my stock heads.

Guaranteed the deck on your shortblock is not whats needed for cometics to seal correctly. Not gonn half ass it, but wont take the 4 minutes to measure the PR length:rolleyes: . Yes you can re-use them.

yeah yeah yeah, i know there are people out there that have used these heads and know the length that is needed. but i guess every motor is different. ill just buy a length checker and do it the right way. i actually dont even know what edelbrock heads they are. one of my instructors came up to me and asked me if i wanted to buy them. its got the 1.90 valves in it is all i know. hopefully the springs will work and i wont have to get the heads milled or anything...but we will see.

since you bought them used I HIGHLY ADVISE taking them to a machine shop for a tear down and inspection. there may be small things wrong that will come back to haunt you.

i bought my used thumpers and i had them torn down for checking, i had 2 bent valves and i put new seals in. good thing i had alot of stock valves laying around from other junk stock heads i have. i know my machinist real well and he charged me like 40 bucks for his time. he cleaned the heads. changed out the valves and put some new seals in i provided and primered the heads with high temp primer. best 40$ i ever spent.

do it now JUST to make sure. dont want to take chances.

yeah, i was definetly gonna take them to a machine shop. not gonna risk it. i just hope they dont have to do too much. gonna go over to holcomb west and talk to david and than get the heads done.

for those of you with these heads do you have to run the head bolt bushings? or what else do i need to bolt these on? nothing special right?

of corse if you take them to a shop they are going to find "something" wrong... they always do($$$)

if you do take them to a shop, make sure that it someone you trust that wont try to jip ya.

its a well known shop that does a lot of work for race teams in the area. its a one man shop and just happens to be in the same building as holcomb motorsports west. so i know david wouldnt let him rip people off
