hey guys i'm a new member to stangnet but not new to forums. i have an ongoing issue with my clutch that i am confused and have no idea about. i know it's a really long, annoying first post, but if you guys can read it and give me some pointers or clues, or even ask more questions about the issues, i'd really appreciate any kind of help you guys can offer. i'm desperate.

when i'm taking off, the clutch takes a second to catch, and during that second, it feels very notchy, like it's missing the "sweet spot", i guess, the feeling of the car lunging forward while slipping the clutch. i have to give it a good amount of gas for it to really give me that solid, lunging forward feeling.
it's a TASK to get perfect shifts every time...

the pedal vibrates all the frickin time. i can hear it over my music sometimes (pretty sure it's the metal piece on the cable that clips to the quadrant) and when i'm coming to a stop, it goes haywire. even though it's the little piece, it goes through my entire pedal. i can touch it with my finger while idling and i can feel it. high revving gears it gets pretty vibrationy, and loud.

it's cyclical though. at random times, the clutch starts to feel really good, like there was never a problem at all with how it was feeling. i can take off from stops well, i can feel the lunging forward feeling with light throttle, etc. but after a week or so of that, it becomes terrible again... the notchy, vibrationy feelings come back. it sounds absolutely hideous most of the time taking off from first. going into second while slipping it, or third, or fourth, and even FIFTH!!!!!!! i can feel the same thing! there was this one time when the pedal become SO tight that it was borderline ridiculoud and borderline impossible to drive the car smoothly. the spot where it would catch would vary from right off the floor to the very end of the pedals travel.

it seems like i have to, monthly, take out the cable and put it back on, because after it feeling like complete hog**** for a few days right after swapping it back in, it actually feels better for about a week, then goes to complete hell. people have told me it could be the throwout bearing, but after today, i tried spinning it to see if it was seized, and it spun completely fine...

my clutch fork may be the problem... i can move it in all freaking directions. up, down, side to side, backwards and forwards.. it almost seems like it is loose somehow. are they supposed to have that much play? and when i took the cable off of the fork a while ago when changing it and such, i had to use a crowbar to engage the clutch slightly to slide the cable out of the fork. (it was when my adjuster was incredibly screwed out (like so the clutch engages farther up in the travel of the pedal)

it's still the stock clutch. here is another thing i noticed... i did a test of how it vibrates, and this is what i did....

i sat on level ground, in first gear, from a stop. i let the clutch out enough to hear the crunchy sound of it, i guess, catching the disc and all. WHEN i gave it a slight amount of gas, i would hear some crunching, then it would go smooth, then crunching, then smooth, then shorter intervals of crunching and smoothness until it caught into gear finally. it goes through longer intervals of crunching and no crunching, like something is way off.

i appreciate any kind of help/someone who reads the entire thing lol. thanks guys.

A video would be more helpful then trying to describe the problem. That is unless you don't have a camera, but most phones take video now days.

Do you have a stock clutch adjuster or aftermarket? How many miles on the car/clutch cable(if it has been replaced)?

i have an aftermarket quadrant and adjuster, and went through two aftermarket cables. the rubber lining shot little metal cables through either side of the black rubber lining, totally screwing up the smoothness of the cable, so i changed back to my stock cable. 54 000 miles on the car, maybe 47 000 on the stock cable, with the rest of those miles on the two aftermarket cables 02 mustang gt stock trans as well, stock gears

i'll take a video tomorrow or friday and post it up somehow.

I hate to say it but you need to inspect the clutch and pressure plate. Something has let go in there. You have a piece of a spring broken that's bouncing around and binding things up. Ever have a problem with the clutch releasing?

what do you mean by releasing?

like engaging the clutch in gear? yeah, it feels extremely choppy. sometimes i'll let it out, not seeming like i let it out quick at all, and it will just dump out hard and jog the car forward in a hurry. going into second and third and 4th gear feel bad too. like it dumps out after a hard notchy feeling. almost like something is skipping......

would i need to drop the trans to inspect it? i go under the car probably once every two weeks to look at it in there. i can spin the TOB with the cable unattached. the clutch fork moves around a good bit tho.

I agree with Steve491: I think it's time for the trans to come out and a forensic analysis of the clutch, release bearing and release arm. It sounds like it's chattering which may be a sign of contamination (e.g. rear main seal leak, transmission front leak), overheating (slipping, heat checks on the flywheel and/or pressure plate) etc. The release bearing sounds baffed. You may even have problems with the diaphram spring which may be causing the pedal vibration you're feeling.

Blow it apart and check the bits and pieces.

ok, so i guess the trans might have to come out. i don't think it's leaking oil, i've never seen any spots on my driveway before... although i will check the dipstick when i leave for class.

can anybody give me a run down on dropping the transmission? and is it something someone who isn't a pro mechanic? i could probably do it, i would have to get two more jack stands though somehow. my friend has a neighbor with a lift, but i doubt i'd be able to use it. and can it be done in a day or two?
