Took the stang out for a spin, probably 75 or 100 miles on it, fresh bottom end, thumper combo up top, well i get on it going from 1st to 2nd, didnt hit the RPM's too high, I hear a pop and is starts missing, the motor is making a ticking noise and you hear a clunking noise every few seconds while idling, anyone have any guesses on this one? All i know is IM SICK! I dread tearing it back down. Holds oil pressure fine and doesnt get hot :bang:

I think its best off tearing it down, and spending a few days going over it. Whats it gonna cost ya? 150.00 in gaskets and about 5 hours? sounds a bit better then just guessing and asking everyone here. Yeah it could be something spimle but who knows. :(

Ah, I'll just get some rest and start the tear down tomm, better it happening now than later, hopefully its something simple in the upper end, I dont think it's a bottom end problem

Thats what my 351 did when it blow a head gasket.Feel like it got a miss and doesn't got the same power it always does?Doesn't want to revv like normal?I just pulled all the plugs, stuck my finger in each plug hole and found two next to each other that were low feeling.Took off thew heads and it burned thru the
num. 3-4 fire rings.

i'm going to have to agree with rick on this one.. dont go taking it all apart just yet.. do a few tests first to narrow your search.. after youve done those tests pull the valve covers and check out all of the springs, rockers, pushrods ect.. if you dont find any problems thewre, then go ahead and start taking the rest apart.. hope it all works out

That was my theory...first you need to find the problem, then figure out what happend and why, then fix it.

Sounds like a pushrod/rocker/valve spring problem. With the popping and missing fire and ticking all of a sudded. Do what Rick suggested, leakdown/compression test. Then pull the vavle covers. If nothing is found, then time to dig deeper. Good luck.
mike.

The culprit has been found!! Damn rocker arm bolt broke off in the head, and ended up with a warped pushrod. Any easy ways to get the broken bolt out that any of you all know? If not I'll get my motor guy to come drill and tap it, but at least its not a major problem...........yet............. :D

Sounds like you lucked out...Those bolts aren't TQ'd all that much so they should come out fairly easy, least if they're Ped's??....I'd drill a 3/16 hole and tap and Easy-out in there...should back out easily...

Other than your mishap...hows it pull???

Also, to prevent chips from getting into the mix, use magnets to gather them. If you wrap them in rags, they'll clean up easier. BTW, those bolts are probably hardened, so try to find a carbide drill bit and run it fairly slow. Good Luck.

Pulls great, its getting better as my comp adjusts, i was trying to give it time and get a dyno tune and a superchip done,im glad this happened close to home and not on the dyno :D

Check to verify that your valve has not seized and that you dont have coil bind at full lift. Other than that, you may have had a difective part. I doubt that you floated a valve into the piston at that speed.

Well guys, Its back together and running like a fine tuned machine
Im gonna get my superchip and dyno tune in a month or so and be finished with it, it didnt feel like i cranked it too hard but i may have, anyone reccommend a comfortable RPM and a Rev limiter, i may go with one just in case my foot gets too happy in the future :D

Look into a MSD Digital 6+, has all the features you will ever need in a nice little package.

How old are the springs on your combo? Did you upgrade your cam when you rebuilt it? I had the same thing happen to some GT40 heads 3 times. I thought I was slapping a piston, but turned out I needed new valve springs. Solved all my problems (before I broke a rod anyways). I also use allen head cap screws, they're the hardest bolt you'll find. Good luck. (Where in KY are you at? I'm in Bowling Green)
