I put a new muffler in the 88 coupe today because a baffle had come loose inside it and was making a loud knock when at idle. Turns out that my rear cat was what I heard rattling when I was crusing down the highway. Anyways, I chopped the exhaust line inbetween the two catalytics and got myself 4 feet of aluminum piping to replace it. Nothing really too complex or interesting, just though I'd give you guys some more reading material. I noticed a bit of difference in acceleration with only one cat and a new muffler. By the way, the muffler is just a cheap economy muffler. I plan on having a full exhaust put in it sometime soon, so I didnt spend too much on a muffler that I will probably only use for a few months. The good news is that there is no more loud knocking coming from the muffler when I am at idle. The bad news is that my idle is still a little erratic and the engine seems to misfire. It's odd because the engine goes smooth once you get it up into driving rpm's but it still seems to misfire at low rpm's. Anybody have any ideas on that? I figured maybe I'll get my timing checked and just do an old cap & rotor, spark plugs, and ignition wire tune-up using genuine motorcraft parts. The idle is erratic between 1000-1500 rpm's. The lower it is at the time, the more noticeably it misfires. I am going to try to do a basic idle reset and clean out my IAC. I want to check my TPS to see if it is at the correct voltage, but I do not have a volt-meter so that could make things a little challenging. Anybody have any other simple solutions to what this could be or any input at all? I would appreciate any help, but if you are stumped, then I'm sure I'll figure it out myself.

By the way - Is there any kind of sealer product that I can run through my vacuum line to seal up any potential leaks?

Gut out the remaining cat that you have for a little more less restrictive flow. I don't know about the vaccume line thing though. I have had the same rattle on my 93 LX and I had to re hang the exhaust to get it to stop, I wish I went your route and cut the thing out though. Maybe this is a future project for when I drop the 2.5 dual and put on the 3 in dual.
