My car is starting to ping a little bit in the higher RPM ranges, i was wondering if anyone could briefly explain what might be the cause. My timing isn't boosted, and i run 91octane. It pings more if im going up a hill, or the car has a load (extra weight). Its a 1994 GT with 63,000 on it. The only mod that has anything to do with the engine is an off road H. Anyone have experience with this too?

It's an all too common problem with our year cars. I recomend doing a search because there is a lot better info out there already than I can provide. I'll tell you this though, I have the same problem. Pinging above 4 grand, 10* timing, 93 octane. Just replaced my ACT and ECT sensors. That helped but didn't completely get rid of the pinging. I'd say you should try running 93 octane first and see if that completely gets rid of the pinging.

Yup so common in our cars and when mine first started pinging w/o the blower I was like WTF?
I ran locked timing @ 24 degrees and my pinging went away and car pulled harder than ever at shifts. I went to get it dyno'd two weeks ago and decided to put the spout back in and go get it tuned that way and on the way I had my top down and could not hear the pinging and lifted the head gaskets under boost as soon as I dyno'd it @ 10 degrees. I must have did so much damage to them on the hour trip to the shop b/c I was use to pulling on it with no pinging .
I will never run unlocked timing again on my car!
I will run 24 degrees locked timing for now on.
Some say don't run locked timing but if you try it your pinging will prob go away also. Every car is different though but never hurts to try. I would start out @ 14-18 degrees first and then 20 if it works out for you.

I would scan for codes to see if anything shows up that way. If nothing from that, which is usually thecase with me, check the plugs. Whenever I've had pinging issues, the plugs have usually been bad. Getting a colder plug usually clears it up. Also tends to be a sign of a clogging fuel filter, or worse a dying pump. Try some fuel system cleaner, it's cheap and usually helps out a lot.

The balancer may also be on the way out or the MAF could be dirty. A dirty air filter may even be to blame. A lot of stuff to check, but checking them may save money in the long run.

Thanks guys. Ive been home in the bay area in CA for a week or so now from Arizona. The pinging has lessened greatly with the thicker air, and cooler weather. Im guessing it was mostly the arizona heat, 95 degree average days and 115 when its really hot definately do not help. Now its just their if the car is under a load, as long as its just me im fine. I didn't gap the plugs when i put them in last, so that could be the problem.
