Hi. I currently have a mazda protege but within a few short months I plan on selling it and getting a 5.0 V8 '98. I plan on starting with the meat and potatoes and give the car a new foundation basically. I am mostly intrested in the engine and transmission and what will fit/what will blow/what can handle alot of power. I checked over the thread that a member is writing up on building an engine and it looks pretty sweet. I was wondering the parts that are involved or considered good/crap. Sorry search nazis - if there are any on this forum, there are alot on my mazda one. Thanks for any help! looking forward to the new community.

Welcome!

Tell us more about the car you're getting. 1998 GT's did not come with a pushrod 5.0L engine.

Good luck.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...&engine=&fuel=&doors=&style_flag=1&cardist=14

thats the closest match to what i'm looking for

...just noticing thats not a 5.0 like you said. Would this still be a good vehicle as a 4.6 or shoud I drop to a '94 or '95 and look for a 5.0?

Eitherway keeping in mind i'd like to keep my mind open to any kind of engine swaps - I know the '98 GT is a SOHC unless you go with the cobra for DOHC but is that much of a factor when building/tuning and i'd imagine I could place a DOHC in the '98 GT unless in my research I decide to go with the '94 or '95 in which case it doesn't matter. so much to learn... fun!

Dude, the 94-95 5.0 are a great car to start on. It's ALOT of fun! I own a 91' notch and my brother has a 95 5.0 GTS. But if you have the money, there is a 1999 or 2001 cobra on autotrader.com for around $10,000. That is a great car too. Ask yourself what you want. Do you want a car that has a good platform to begin with, or do you want to get a Fox-body and build it from the ground up? Do some good research and you'll find your answer.

GOOD LUCK!

Well i'd like to get a car that runs great stock - than as time goes on i'll gradually build an engine and transmission on a stand outside the car until its completed and ready to go in. Thats the idea - so as far as compatability the '94 or '95 wont be any different from the '98 right when I go to put in the new engine - I read about this 4V but that seems to be a 4.6 thing

I discovered this VT Engine company - i'd kinda rather build my own engine and go through the whole experience of that but maybe if I started with their shortblock and built off that. Their 302 shortblock is 3,900 or 4,400 depending on the rods

The EFI 5.0 was made from 86-95. The 96-98 were the 1st years of the SOHC 4.6, and the 99-04 came with better heads on the 4.6

As far as throwin a 5.0 off a stand into a 96-98 car, I don't see a problem except for the wiring harness and computer maybe? I've no idea about the tranny. Someone might be better at this than me.

If you have your heart set on the 94-98 body style, then buy a 94-95 and just make it easy cause they're the last years of the 5.0 powered cars

^^This would be very expensive/time consuming for not much gain/reason. Like Strype and others said, stick to the 94-95 for the 5.0, SN95 + smallblock.

This is kinda what I was looking for to start - now i've eliminated the 4.6 and the idea of taking a 4.6 to a 5.0. I'd prolly go with the '94 or '95 - reading the 5.0 is cheaper too than the 4.6 to modify. As far as a new engine in the '94 or '95 i'll keep reading on that.

if you just want to modify it, then yest the 94/95 is the best if you like that bodystyle...imo stay away from the 96-98 cars, they are dogs and no huge aftermarket....99+ got decent again, or the 94-04 cobra's are all kick ass and can be had at good prices for the early ones.

Lets say i'd buy a '94 or '95 GT - car runs good stock everything as is - than I buy the same engine but in good condition, one that I can rip apart and build back up until its fully built and able to go in the car. I should express that my goals for power are around 600-650 with quarters around 10's safely. I know this can't be done with bolt ons like exhaust and stuff which is why i'm reading heavily into the engine/chassi/drive-train options to start.

man, do you know how damn fast 10 seconds is????

That's a good plan, as they 5.0 motors are cheap and you can get one cheaply to play with on the engine stand, however for now drop some aluminum heads and a good intake and bolt ons onto that stock motor and you're doing 12's, that's enough to hang with a z06 vette...not fast enough, slap on a small supercharger and blow em out of the water...

Anything is possible if you have enough money Sounds to me like you need to aquire the car and get familiar with the parts available and the results they offer. At this point all you're going to end up doing is Eopinioned all over the place....get the car...read everything available to you (it only saves you money and frustration) use the 'search' feature as there is a wealth of info there for the taking....and ahhh yes......WELCOME TO STANGNET, HOME OF THE FREE LAND OF THE LOST TOYS
