New to me Mustang needs tuning

Hello all, new member here with my first classic car, a 1964.5 Coupe.

I purchased the car today, knowing there were a few issues and the prior owner stating it needed a "tune up". The car is an original 6 cylinder car now sporting a 289 with Edelbrock intake, some sort of mild cam, and a Weber 4 bbl carb. The previous owner also installed a new HEI distributor, new coil, alternator, and an electric fan/aluminum radiator.

According to the prior owner, the car starting running rough after the install of the last set of parts. It will run at idle for several minutes, usually without issue, but when you put the car in gear it bogs down and will shut itself off (especially when going into R if that makes sense).

So help a beginner out. Where should I start troubleshooting? What tools are needed? How do I do the work?

I'd love to learn how to fix these things myself vs paying someone to do it. I'll tinker with it first and if it doesn't get better, I'll take it to a pro.
