New to StangNet

Hey guys, I'm Preston, and I'm new to StangNet! I just got a new 2008 Candy Apple Red Mustang GT and I'm so stoked!

I started looking around for performance parts, even though I'm perfectly happy with it stock ;), and came across this site!

I think this site will help me learn more about tuning my car, and making it even better than it currently is!

Any tips/pointers in the direction of modifying a car (for noobs) would be awesome, because I know so little right now. I also don't have a lot of extra $$$ to spend, so I've been looking more into a new CAI and such.

Thanks!
-Preston

install is easy, click the link in my signature, and it will be very similar. i dont have an opinion on that intake though, as i dont know anyone that has one.

welcome to :SNSign:

Welcome, the 'no-tune' intakes like this one don't do much other than change the way your car sounds at wide open throttle. I have the K&N version (practically the same thing), and if I had to do it all over again i would have saved my money and invested in a C&L or JLT (with tune) which seems to be pretty popular on this site. The butt-dyno did not show any horsepower increase if you know what I mean.

To compare, when I put on a off-road pipe (no catalytic converters) I immediately felt the difference.

Happy modding, these are really fun cars.

Thanks a ton for the replies, guys.

I realize that adding a bolt on really won't really add much horsepower... It just might free up some that the stock was preventing from being used. (like a 300hp engine really only get 260 hp stock, right?)

I was also wondering if you'd recommend the K&N over the BBK? I'm really stoked on the improved gas mileage with both of these... Any testimony to that?

What about the this AIRAID?

It too doesn't require a re-tune based on the specs it gets better RWHP and torque gain.

And yeah, I've been thinking about spending a little more money and getting a CAI combo kit which comes with an intake and a tuner. But then again, I have no idea what a tuner really is or how to use it. If anyone has any pointers there, that would be awesome!

And by the way, the JLT does look amazing. Its not that expensive, I believe, and gets HUGE gains. I just am clueless about the tuner.

Tuners rework the computer to optimize it for newly installed aftermarket equipment. Such as a larger intake tube, or a new gear ratio out back for example. They can adjust fuel/air ratio, timing, shift points, red lines, etc. Its important to get one of those when you do a cold air intake because you change the inlet tube size to accommodate more air and the stock computer doesn't know what to do. The tuner adjusts that. You can get custom tunes that optimize the motor for power, torque, and even gas mileage.

I'd suggestion wider rims, fatter tires, and lowering springs. When I first bought my car, driving around in the stock wheels/tires was like riding on bicycle tires.

Oh, and welcome aboard. Happy spending $$$$

Thanks for all the help everyone! That makes so much more sense now.

So...

A tuner basically removes any limitation from the stock tune to get more horsepower/torque, and makes the vehicle become capable of new modifications. These modifications require more energy, and that energy is achieved through better cold air intakes.

So my understanding is the start of tuning a car begins with making it capable of modifications, meaning a CAI and a re-tune...

Am I right? :D

And it would be awesome if anyone could point me in the direction of what tuner/CAI to get. Just so you know, I most likely won't be drag racing often (maybe a few times just for fun, who knows). Basically just everyday driving.

I've looked at this Brenspeed C&L Street CAI and SCT X3 Intake Tuner Kit, which although is expensive, looks pretty sweet.

Brands and advice would be great!
Thanks a ton again everyone.

Hey Preston,

Glad to have you aboard.

I would put a Boss 302 OHV in your new car, sounds great and has gobs of power.
You would have to do a lot of mods to get the kind of power the Boss 302 has out of the crate.

Keep coming back.

Hey man congrats on the buy i got the SAME exact car lol GT Auto, bone stock same color as well lol and im in the EXACT same position as you are...
Im still doing some homework but if we get a tuner on the car does that void the warrnty? Im very scared to do ANYTHING To it cuz i dont want to void that warrnty i still want to keep that warrnty...
That being said What exactly voids the warrnty on any mods?
