New to the Game

I just picked up a 67 coupe with a 289 4v. Mostly stock but it does have sub frame conectors and was thinking of dropping a 347 but Im a little worried that will be to much power. Should I just hop up the 289 or go with a new engine? The car is not orignal. Picks will be next.

Never too much engine......but you need to ask yourself how much power do I need and secondly and most important, how much coin can I afford to spend.

With the 68 your choices are greatly enhanced due to having more engine compartment to work with. I have a 347 and am very pleased with it, the only thing that I am going to change is the block due to the fact that the factory 5.0 block tends to split apart beyond the 500HP threshold and I want to either spray mine are force some air into it via supercharger in the future. A Dart block is in my future.

If I were in your shoes I would stroke a 351W to somewhere over 400ci. Ther are folks on here that can tell you what is the stoutest factory block to start with would be or dig deep and buy a dart based block or some sort of either Ford Racing or aftermarket block to start your build.

In any case lots of smart guys on here to help so welcome to the club....

The problem with "hopping up" an older engine is that when you add good heads, it puts excess strain on the old bottom end and you ruin the engine. If the engine is fresh, it is an option but I would go with a stroker.

Yeah, the 351W is nearly a drop-in for replacement for the 289, but the 289 can also be taken out to that 347 inches you mentioned. I personally would do a 331 as a compromise between power and longetivity. Actually, I would keep the 289 and make it a high revver, but that's just me.

I have a 351W waiting for a rebuild anyway. We'll see where that goes.
