NONONO

Up to 120,000 RPM. Rounds per minute or 200 rounds per second. Seems kinda crazy to me. They say they can do it though.

wow, a super bb gun that shoots small golf ball like projectiles

that is pretty amazing how they can do that... i couldn't read the whole thing but is it spring powered? i'm wondering how they can 'spin' it out at that high a speed

Didn't really get into too much detail on that. I was thinking magnetic, but that would create some heat. They say no heat, so I really don't know. Its electronic, so I guess we will have to wait and see.

There has to be some heat from that many projectiles coming out of the barrel.

If that is true our military dominance will be complete. MUUHAHAHAHAHA! Seriously, it does sound pretty awesome. I watched a TLC or Discovery special on a weapons system that fires using electronic pulses. It was capable of 30,000 rounds per minute, but still used propellants to move the projectile. This is definitely superior.

It is electric, throws 50 cal rounds at 3000fps, and yet generates no heat. I have to throw the here.

I don't know. I think that Lockheed Martin is who picked it up. If this is true, they will be the ones to make it happen. I can believe everything but the no heat part. When I see it work, then I will be a believer. Anything can happen, just takes time.

12 years ago, if you told me there would be 300GB hard drives for sale off the shelf, I would have told you no way. Now, i have seen Dual SATA 600GB drives for sale. Technology is fast. Amazing things can happen.

I just dont see how they could overcome recoil or for that matter heat. Even if there is no powder a .308 let alone a 50 cal. slug propelled at that many FPS has got to have a little throw back power. I dont know, all I can say is bye bye opposing infantry.

1200 rounds per minute is old- the German MG42 from WWII could do 1200+ per minute easily.

I've got two hobbies; cars and guns.

Again.... it's not 1,200 RPM's. It's 120,000 RPM's.

Thoughts:

1) The inertia on this thing is going to be enormous. It'll take a powered assist to aim this thing while powered up, if it works like the article says. Spinning metal balls around in a circle at 3,000 - 8,000 fps? Think about moving a bicycle tire quickly and precisely around while it's spinning. It's more difficult than when it's not spinning. Now think about aiming this weapon quickly and precisely when it's spinning around 200 rounds per second at 8,000 fps inside of it.

2) I'm curious to see how they solved the vibration/recoil. Basically, it sounds like they've constructed a centrifuge and mounted it inside a weapon. Ever seen a laboratory centrifuge? The researchers have to balance it right, or it'll vibrate itself right off the lab bench. Maybe it fires two rounds at once, each spinning in the opposite direction.

3) Frictionless and heatless my butt. Rubbing one metal surface across another at 8,000 fps? Next they'll be claiming it'll run off of 9V rechargeables.

4) They advertise the weapon as light - do they realize how heavy 50,000 steel/tungsten penetrators are?

5) Jamless? Give it to a soldier for an hour in the field. He'll figure out a way to jam it, I promise.

6) I'd hate to be within 500 feet or so of this weapon when it's powered up and firing, and an RPG hits the weapon and blows it apart.
