NEW WHEEL BEARINGS

Is there a certain brand of wheel bearings that is better than stock or most aftermarket bearings? If so what brand should I use?
Also should I change out the bearings in pairs or is it ok to do just the one that goes bad?

For a daily-driver I would just go OE. In fact, go to a Ford dealer to get the part, not a "jobber" otherwise you might end up with crappy Chinese bearings or castings. I think with Ford you've got a better chance of obtaining parts made with real, strict, quality control processes and checks...

I have done this job a couple times you will need a 36mm socket use a new retaining nut do not reuse the old. Clean the ABS sensor and paint the brake dust shields while in there. The torque spec on the big nut is 258 pounds.

Oh and check the tires they may be severely worn or cupped due to bad bearing.

the tires are new only a few months old and the bearing just started going so I'm pretty sure that they should be ok.
WOW! 258ft lbs I hope my tq wrench goes that high.
how difficult is this job to do for ones first time doing it? I'm no mechanic but I have done some other jobs ie;installed my supercharger,changed out the fuel pump,changed throttle body and plenum basic stuff. will this be much more difficult?

I have replaced the rotors on a 2005 F150 and they have a similar torque spec. My torque wrench wasn't even in the same zip code.

Very un scientific, but my Son and I stood on the breaker handle. I figured if over 500 pounds jumping on the handle wasn't enough, it would just have to do.

IMO, anybody that can do a supercharger install can handle front wheel bearings several times over. Other than needing a special socket and a very strong breaker bar, the job is straight forward.

Warning. Do not use a regular ratchet wrench to torque unless you want to destroy it. Use a breaker bar.

? I'm not sure why you think that or who told you that, wheel bearings are nothing like brakes that wear at the same rate, I replaced my pass side wheel bearing two years ago and my drives side is perfectly fine and would have been a waste of money to replace something that's not broke, now If it was the rear axle bearing thats a different story because you have to drain the diff fluid anyway and it would be a waste to replace the fluid twice so its best to do both sides !

Also relacing a front wheel bearing is a very easy job !

No it is not necessary to do both sides however they are prone to fail so if you have extra money you could do both.

I also stood on the breaker bar and went with the German torque spec; goodentight lol.

It is a very easy job to do.

I went and got a quote to replace 1 side and it was $115 for the part and $95 for the labor Aprox.
Please dont laugh but I went on line to price the wheel bearing and they were like $45-$50 but on my search I came accross the wheel bearing already pressed into the 5 lug hub assembly??? Is this an option or should I just do the bearing? the price for the bearing already pressed in the assembly was only a little more $$ like $79 would this be easier or would this more likely be a cheap part that will prematurley fail. I would only like to do this once if I can help it.

FWIIW, Ford envisioned that the part would be replaced as an assembly. The part arrives with the bearings sealed for life and no real thought was given to service of the sub-assembly.

If it were me making the decision, I would buy the sealed unit and be done with it.

Think about the $$ you will be saving if doing the work yourself.

The bearing and hub are integral. You must replace the entire hub when the bearing goes.

When I did the job last time I used parts from the parts counter price as I recall was:
Hub bearing assy $74
36mm nut $14
Dust cap $6

When I replaced mine, the factory part was made by Timken. Autozone sells timken replacements also, they might be able to save you a few bucks for the hub assembly over a dealer.
