I'm thinking about buying a Mustang. I have a race only Super/Pro bracket car now (another Manufacture). I'm planning on selling it after the holidays. I'm too busy to go racing every week & want another street legal car. My 1st. thoughts were 94-95 Mustang 5.0L. Basicly because there inexpensive & parts are also. The more time I spend on this site & others looking around, I'm getting interested in 4.6L's also. I'd just like to get some ideas from the guys that own them.

The car will only be used on nice days in the warm months. It will get trailered to the track & beat on as often as possible!(probably 5-6 times a year if I'm luckey). I would like it to run low 11.0- or faster in street form. Cost in the $10-15K range. I want a supercharged car. There are sooo many choices of superchargers that I don't know what is good & what isn't. That's why I wanted to ask.

Finally, I know 4.6L's have got to be expensive to modify, compared to 5.0L's. Would you go 4.6L again, if you had the choice to start over??? Also are Cobra's & Saleens worth the extra money??

For your budget and goal of 11s I would suggest a 5.0

11's might require a forged bottom end. Which in the end could cost a lot more than modifying a 5.0 and getting it in the 11's.

I'm not talking about buying a stock car & building it. I want to buy a modified car. From what I'm seeing on ebay, highly modified 4.6L (supercharged) cars can be had for this price range. I know how much it costs to build cars (believe me). But I also know people just want to get rid of them when they want something else. That's ebay!!

you should talk to bennyblown2v he has a stang taht is already s/c and all the other goodies to go along with it. not too sure what he is asking though.

for a streetable 11 sec. car i'd go for a s/c'ed 4.6 gt (99-o4)



already having 350-400 very streetable rwhp all you'll need is a good suspension setup and some good tires to get in to the 11's

Thanks for the replys so far. I posted a simular thread on the 5.0L forum. Those guys are telling me not to go 4.6L! Convince me on a 4.6L. What are the Pros? 2v & 4V. Remember this will not be a daily driver. & will not be driven any large distance's. But I don't want to rebuild it or work on major mechanical stuff constantly. Which supercharger is the best? performance wise & duribility?

You can probly do a non-streetable high-mid 11 4.6 2v for 15k, but since you didn't build it yourself expect issues.

The two weak points on this car are the rear axle and the bottom end of the block.

springs etc I'm sure you can do yourself for a reasonable price, and throwing on stronger spline axles isn't overly expensive... but uprgading the block will push you out of you 15k price range.

These are definately great cars and the 2v's LOVE boost!

Thanks for the input. I'm actually a very qualified Technician. I'm a long time Chrysler tech. I also do alot of side work at home on all makes. I have a lift in my 1200 sq.ft. garage at home. I'm totally capable of doing any type of work on the car myself. I have a Duster race car now. Before this I had a Toyota P/U that I built from scratch with a stock compression 318 Mopar (moderately modified) with Nitrous. It ran 11.80's with drag radials, & full exhaust.

I miss having a STREET vehicle that I can go & race when I have time. Mustangs have always intriguged me. The race car is going to net me in the 12-15K range, so that's what I'm going to be working with. I want to find a car that someone has put money in & for whatever reason, they need to get out of it. Call me a predator if you want, but I KNOW what it costs to start from scratch, & I'm not going to do that this time.

Dunno if this helps or not but the bolt ons on my car and DRs will easily net mid-high 12's and most car similar to mine in mileage and bolt ons are going for 13-18k

All you would need to buy is a drag suspension (1-4k) and some stickies. Eventually the rear end would blow out though so you'd need a explorer rear end and some axles for another grand or so.

I've seen a few 99-02's S/Cd going for 11k or so, but like I said before I dunno if I would trust them coming from E-Bay, but if you found one in your area you could tinker around with... well then maybe you'd find your perfect car.

Don't have any specific cars to refer you to, but in the area I work in, you can (at times) find pretty well modified fox body stangs in the $2500 to $3000 range... and in nice shape... Pemberton, NJ 08068.
I love the 4.6's because I think they are much more beautiful (I am a girl, so looks matter, haha) and still have the capacity to be fast, but someday hope to have a 5.0 again (but next time a fox-body) in addition to my current car, just because I think so much can be done with them. Of course, I am not the most knowledgeable person on the site, my point was just to let you know that modified stangs can be found more cheaply than ebay if you look...

thanks myponyrocks, I know the ebay deal. You really need documentation on engine/mods. Even then who knows? I'm just in the learning curve now.

So I'm seeing quite a few posts that say I can get in the HIGH 11's with a 4.6L 2v Blown engine? I've heard the bottom end is the problem beyond this point. Is this right? Doe's the 4v Cobra engines have a stronger bottom end??

the Cobras do have a bit more stout block...

One thing I forgot to mention (as I always do), a full bolt on car with Nitrous should run in the 11s no problem even possibly on street tires. (I just am not a fan of spray).

It is realistic to expect a bolt on car to run 12's no problem.

When you get supercharged Detonation becomes a major issue. When you push the block beyond about 350 - 400 hp (depending on who you ask) you risk the short block. A new short block can be had for $3,000 to 5,000 already assembled... but that will likely blow your budjet. Buying a previously supercharged mustang is quite risky in my oppinion.

A cheap 11 second car is an oxymoron!

I'm in central Ohio, I'm not looking to buy yet. Just doing some fact finding, (trying to get educated!). It will probably a month or 2 before I'm looking actively.

I'm partial to the 94-98 style but the 4.6 is coming into it's own. 11's would more than likely require a supercharger (Kenne Bell comes to mind) in your price range but it should be built to handle the extra HP.
