I just wanted to introduce myself. I am new to the board. Not really new to mustangs, (just an old screename) I have a 03 Cobra, and I just recently got a 1993 LX 4 cyl. I got the car for basically nothing, and the body is really clean on it, so I am going for the 8cyl swap. I have a local engine builder, who says he will take a 351w and stroke it to a 383. He suggested that I run a carb, but I prefer fuel injection. He told me with this carb setup it would put me in the 450-475hp range. I am hoping for the same or more with a efi system. I was thinking of using the new Edlebrock VICTOR FORD 5.8L EFI manifold, with a set of Victor Jr heads. My 1st of many questions is can I use a 5.0 computer and harness with this setup. I am guessing that I would go with a 90 or up computer so that I would run a maf. I have heard that alot of the 302 and 351 stuff work well together. I know that I would need a custom tune, especially with bigger injectors and etc. How do you tune a 5.0 computer. I know how they tune 0bd2 computers, does it work the same way? Does this setup seem like it would work. Is there anything else I need to take into consideration? I plan on running a tubular k member, and getting a 8.8 rear for the car, and a tremec 5spd. Thanks for the help, and I am sure I am going to have alot more questions.

It would be a lot easier and less work to go with a carb. As far as I know you can use the 5.0 wiring harness even for the fuel injected swap, and also the computer and 89 is when they started the mass air, before that it was the speed density. I know you need to get the oil pan kit to put the 351w into the mustang. I don't know where people get the custom tune's at I imagine a performance shop. I have know doubt that if the guy said he could make 450hp with the carb setup you could make that or more with the fuel injection, but it's gonna be a lot more work. As far as fitment I believe all the 5.0 accessories will go on the 351, except if I remember right you can't use the 5.0 balancer. 5.0 intake wont fit the 351 except I think a 351 lower with 5.0 upper works I believe. If I messed up on something I'm sure someone will say so on here. I haven't done a lot with the fuel injected motors, hope some of this helps.

If you are trying to build the shortblock cheap, a 393 would be better (an aftermarket crank, stock 351w rods, and stock 302 pistons.)

but yes, I would second the carb.

I built a 393 shortblock that made right at 450rwhp on the motor with ported victor jr heads, super victor intake and a small solid roller with a TKO.

thanks for the help guys. I know a carb setup would be alot easier, but how reliable are carbs nowadays? I'm thining back to old school, where they were hard to start, had to choke them etc. Also from an emissions standpoint. I live in CT and I have to go through emissions with it. I thought if I got a 90 and up computer and harness I could make it work with the 351. Has anybody done this?

As stated by strtrcr, you could use a computer such as an a9l, but it would have to be tuned/ reprogramed for your new setup. Most reputable tuning shops should be able to accomplish this. the wiring harness should work, as long as you are using a f/i 351. However the harness may have to be modified for different sensor/ control locations.
