1965 Fastback bought 5 years ago with a pretty much unknown history. Spent the last 5 years fixing it up and just now started to drive the car (less than 300 miles before the following happened). Door plate indicates it started as a 289 4 speed. When I bought it it had a 302 with a C4 that has no ID on it. The C4 is a case fill, 157 tooth, 24 spline transmission. The other day at about 45 mph the starter somehow engaged the flexplate (my 16 y/o son was driving, I was in the passenger seat and honestly I don't know how it happened) Now it is at the mechanics. He says the starter did not seem to fit the motor, like it had been ground on to make fit. Question: Is there any special year starter/flexplate combo that should be purchased to make a 302 fit with a C4? Does the starter/302/flexplate/C4 combo all have to be a particular year model etc? Thanks.

the starter should come from an automatic car. chances are however that the starter itself is just loose and needs to be tightened up properly.

Is the block plate missing? Thats the plate that goes between the engine and trans. I have seen that happen on a car that was missing the block plate.

Just talked to the mechanic. He has determined it is a 1968 302 and a 1966 C4, and he should have everyting going back together. Thanks for the help guys.
