Beware the Tri-ys from Mustangs Unlimited. The welds look like they were done by a child and a previous purchaser had drilled/egged out the holes trying to get them to fit. The compressed/torn gaskets and dents were clue that something was wrong. They have given me a return authorization number, and will likely just send them out to the next unlucky buyer. Hope thats not you. What a waste of time.

While I agree that Mustangs Unlimited shouldn't have sent out sub-standard parts that were possibly used, they did agree to take them back and make it right, so why post a thread bashing them? I've had very good luck returning damaged stuff to MU, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. Stuff happens, but good customer service separates good vendors from rip-off artists.

The phone rep was helpful but said several times that they have No Control over what is sent out to customers. If that's true, they need basic schooling in commitment to quality. I do hope that by posting this there will be two possible outcomes:

1. Word gets back to MU that they have a very basic product and quality assurance problem.
2. People on this list do not order and receive the same set or manufacturer source that was sent to me.

In all fairness, they are probably not made buy MU.
They are probaby Patriot Tri-Ys that are sold by any Stang parts house, and the same headers that almost everyone complains about.

I got a set of the Patriots because they were inexpensive.
Had the same problem as others, and just chalked it up to "you get what you pay for", rather than go after the retailer.

The Patriot tri-y's on my '68 not only fit perfectly, but the welds are very nice. In fact I also bought a set of Patriot shorties for a customer's street rod I'm building and they were very nice as well. I've never heard anyone say anything negative about Patriot headers, and I don't remember them being all that inexpensive, either.

The MU catalog does not specify the manufacturer and the sales reps don't know.

Right ? I make headers and I would hope if I made a mistake, and returned the money or fixed the problem I would not get kicked in the nuts like this after holding up my end of the deal. Dayum, not cool

While one bad experience doesn't make a patern, it is good to know when these things happen. I agree that it is a bit harsh to state right out that they are all bad quality and don't order from them but I do want to know about problem orders from different vendors. I think we can all agree to chalk this one up to a warehouse mistake until we hear about other Mustangs Unlimited order issues that create a pattern.

This list has been very valuable to me in helping solve or avoid many issues. Many high volume vendors may not be as committed to the quality received by each individual as smaller volume fabricator/vendors. I will continue to be grateful for alerts from this list to avoid possible pitfalls, even at the possible risk of mentioning a business name.

I have no problem with naming names, but I don't think you are justified in bashing someone who did (in my opinion) everything to rectify the problem and make amends with you, only to have you rip them on a public forum. If they'd told you to get lost, or denied any responsibilty, then by all means let your fellow builders know the score. I just don't agree with berating someone who's going the extra mile to please you.

I've bought lots of stuff from Mustangs Unlimited and never had a problem with quality. That includes the $1300 tri power setup I have. There's bad apples in every barrel, they made an effort to rectify the situation, then you go and bash them publicly ? I sure wouldn't want you as a customer no matter how good your money was.

This is an intersting thread. THere is a trend developing that people have become so intolerant and inflexable they will balk at the first sign of perceived injustice, rather than trying to see the big picture. Check out this link. I read this story on MSN.com
http://www.customersarealways.com/2007/07/sprint_dumps_1000_customers.html

Now, I have Sprint, and sometimes they can be a problem. THey ranked worst in customer support. And they are not the only company that is realizing that a large portion of their customers are actually costing them money to support, and are cutting them loose. I can't find the original MSN articl, cause they listed the top ten companies that were doing this. Including banks.

I've bought very little from MU, but my other coworkers say they're great. Whatever. D. Hearne has it right. If they are making an effort to resolve the problem, there is no problem. People are human. We all make mistakes. I find it hard to believe MU delibertly sent out a butchered set of headers. And that's the real point. Intent. Did someone in shipping pick up that order and decide to screw over a customer? Knowing that there would be at least a 85% chance or better that the customer would call the company?
Sorry, but I am trying to illustrate to those members that may not have the long term experiance some of us do in dealing with vendors, or just dealing with people in general. Take a deep breathe next time and don't immediatly assume someone is out to get you. Assume they made a mistake-until they prove you wrong. And we want to know about those companies. You can count on that.

Quality control has for the most part gone away in this modern world we live in.
Price, and speed that an item can be obtained have won out.
That said, if MU is willing to make it right by sending you a new set, then I don't think you can ask for much more.
However, I would probably be just as bent having to wait (again) for the part to be re-shipped.

P.S. - I have dealt with MU a bunch of times with great results.
