NJ is really tough on smog. I know a bunch of guys who can't pass for **** in that state. Some of which still have functioning smog equipment in place as well. If it makes a difference to you, I'm on Long Island and can hook you up with a stock catted H pipe for inspection purposes if you need to borrow it.

Yeah its hard these days to get one...I have the stock catted H-pipe sitting in my bedroom closet..LOL...im looking to get rid of it make me an offer on it...

Why not just register it as a collector vehicle?

To be classified as a "collector vehicle" you need to apply when you register and make sure that the vehicle:
Is not registered as a "historic vehicle" or a "street rod"
Is not driven more than 3,000 miles per year
Is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle"

To be classified as a "collector vehicle" you need to apply when you register and make sure that the vehicle is:

Vehicles applying for collector vehicle status must be approved by MVC. Follow these steps to apply:

Submit a letter from the vehicle manufacturer, recognized car club or a collector organization attesting to the vehicle’s limited production status. Must be printed on official letterhead
Show proof of limited-use insurance
Include photographs of front, driver side, passenger side and rear of the vehicle
Mail all materials and photos to:

I/M Support Unit
P.O. Box 680
Trenton, NJ 08666-0680
Applications can only be processed through the mail and will take approximately two weeks. Once you receive an approval letter from the MVC, take the original letter with raised seal, the original application, and $25 (check, money order, credit card or cash) to any MVC Agency to purchase a collector vehicle status voucher which will be issued immediately.

Because it isnt so easy to get that type of registration NOT AT ALL...i know a few people that have it and they said it was way to much of a hassle then the nest time they go to re-register it they tried giving them a hard time again ....You need letter documenting its a specialty vechile blah blah blah way to hard when the car is 25 yrs old then it will be easier to get QQ plates for it historic type plates i mean...

With my GT40s ecam and explorer intake and no smog pump and a stock h pipe I passed with flying colors with my 89.

Enough cats will get anything to pass.
When IL used to require older cars to pass, my Mustangs always fast passed.
We even passed a blown v8 Ranger when it was titled as a 4cyl. It took two new catco cats on a single exhaust to get it to pass, but we did it.
For fun, one time I put 4 cats per side and had the exhaust exit before the rear tire...these were hooked up to my long-tubes. The car ran so clean you couldn't even smell it. The cool part was that it sounded identical to a Cobra kit car.
I was thinking about moving to Georgia at one point and they did not offer a show car exemption like IL did, but the trick was that they did not test anything 1981 or older. I would have sold my fox off and put the running gear into something older.

I would be very suprised if someone had that discussion on the internet. FWIW, I know someone that cut a new piece of pink construction paper the right size for quite some time. Where do you live in NJ? I've heard that there are quite a few shops in Jersey City that will pass you. My car went through with flying colors.
I've done the collector registration for the past 4 years. I've never ran into problem. I go to the DMV in lodi, and never needed any special documentation. Filled out the collector registration form right there, paid the fee for the voucher, and got in front of the line for inspection. They take your mileage down, ask you to go around the block to verify your odometer works, and you get a sticker.
I see it was updated Sep 1 2007, but I last did it this way June 08. Im going to do it again this year.

That's because you are grandfathered in. You don't have to go through all the bs they make you do now.
