No 4'th gear

For some strange reason I seem to have lost 4'th gear. It's an automatic trans, and the fluid level looks okay. It just goes 1, 2, 3, overdrive. Any thoughts?

Overdrive is 4th gear in an AOD.

Uh, what? It's supposed to go 1, 2, 3, OD (4).

Yup the AOD is a 3 speed automatic with an overdrive (read: 4th gear).

Really? oops. I thought in an AODE there were 4 and an overdrive. Hmm. The car seems to be at a higher RPM @ 70mph than usual. Seems fine through the rest of the gears and idles normally. Also seems to lack power at freeway speeds. As I accelerate from 60-80 the RPM's stay at about 2000 and don't seem to change with acceleration. It feels different than usual.

I think the AODE uses a lockup converter, so it might feel like another gear once the converter locks. I was guessing it was a plain jane AOD in a Fox being over on this side of the 5.0 Mustang section.

I just called ford and turns out an AODE is 4 gears AND an overdrive. So I definately have a problem. Guess I'll take it to a shop. I'm a pretty novice home mechanic and from what I hear a tranny is not easy.

WTF!!! Now I called a trans. shop and they said 3 and an OD. I just don't know who to trust anymore... -dissillusioned

in the owners manual i believe it says that overdrive is 4th gear.
