I have a 1990 Mustang GT my headlight stop working my parking light work, I replace headlight switch that didnt help.Does anybody know what wrong with it?by the way when I pull for high beam it work Thanks
Check out the turn signal/multifunction switch. It controls the headlight high/ low beam and the wiring and connectors frequently cause problems.
A word of caution about multifunction switches is in order here. The multifunction switch (high/low beam, wiper, turn signals) are different for different years. 87-98 will work in any 87-89 car. The 90-93 switches only work in 90-93 cars. You can't put an early model switch in a late model car, nor can you put a late model switch in an early car.
The permantent fix is here: http://www.corral.net/tech/maintenance/foglights.html The stock wiring isn't up to the job and is overheating. The headlight switch & turn/multifunction switch are affected by Ford's wiring problem. Sometimes it overheats so badly that the plastic shells of the wiring connectors start to melt. This will show you how to add a relay to the fog lights to relieve the overload on the headlight wiring.
I did the fog light fix and have had no more headlight problems. I burned up 2 multifunction switches before I learned about the fog light fix.
JR is right on about checking the wiring at the MF switch. On my '88 it is a red/yel wire, as I recall. They are known for burning up or having the wiring terminal simply backed out of the connector.
The flash-to-pass circuit is separate from the headlight circuit from the MF switch upward (toward the headlight switch). This is why Flash to pass can work while the headlights dont function on their own.
