I'm looking to lay my hands on a drive train and I'm being held up by delivery. I want to know if I'm missing an option or there's an easier way. I have no forklift and no loading dock, but I do have a pallet jack. The load may or may not come on a liftgate truck, and I can't know until it gets to the delivery truck and I have no control over that choice of vehicle. It will most likely be a standard flat bed trailer with no liftgate. A forklift rental is about $1000, ouch. What's the easiest way to get my motor and trans delivered here to the shop without a forklift? Use a tranship site and specify liftgate truck for the last segment?

Are you getting short block, long block, crate engine or full engine with trans attached?

I'm sure that you've got to have a local hardware store, freight store, maybe even a UPS store, that you can make arrangements with as a delivery location.

Just someplace with a loading dock.

On an LTL shipment, I could specify a lift gate delivery. As the engine and crate were about 300lb, pizza for muscles was cheaper. But a V-8 and a transmission are heavier, and it might be worth it.

As mentioned you should call the carrier, and pay for the liftgate. If you catch it before it goes out for delivery, you should be ableto schedule this. Be sure to talk to the local terminal's dispatch, NOT the "1-800" call center.

Another option is a ramp truck backed up to the trailer, use winch to drag out of the semi

Weighing options. Either an engine and trans in different crates or a bolted together pair. Doesn't really matter, they all require a freight delivery with offloading capabilities I don't have here.

Can't get it high enough to unload a freight trailer. Or even a pickup. I can take a low trailer to the transhipper if I have to and then use a hoist.

Maybe in 1967 America, but everywhere I checked was a hard nope because of insurance liabilities. Or they want moola and I might as well use the transhipping guys at that point.

I suspect if I get the two in seperate crates that is more likely, but if it's a bolted toegehre pair coming from a parts yard, it's going to be a single crate and freight truck and first two calls were "forklift required".

That's interesting. I could rent the bobtail liftgate and pallet jack it across then drop it myself. I'll check pricing on a truck. The forklift is $1000 for the day, it can't be that much.

wonder how much it would cost to ship you a pair

Check towing services for a flatbed.
most of the engines and transmissions we had delivered to the shop came LTL and the truck had a lift gate.

I have picked long blocks from my pickup with an engine hoist. I even unloaded a short block by myself once with only an engine stand to mount it to first and then "drop it down" the few inches onto the ground. Then it was on the stand already.
