2007 GT 20,000 miles of terror manual trans orig. clutch hurst shifter

I went for a drive the other day and when I went to back up she popped out of reverse I figured I didn't have it in all the way so I tried again and again to no avail. Finally had my buddy man-handle it in place while I backed up. This worked the first time. At our next stop however when we went for a repeat she backed up but with a horrible gear grindin. Forward gears seem fine. Any ideas? Reverse has always been kinda funky to engage figured this was normal. Had to play with clutch sometimes to get it to go in Reverse and definantly wiggle the shifter.

Is reverse just the first gear to go in a catastrauphic transmission failure or is my linkage just out of whack.

Sounds like the hurst isnt fully engaging reverse. Does your hurst shifter have adjustable stops or allow you to adjust the throw percentage? I have an MGW so I'm not familiar with the Hurst.

The Tremec 3550 behind my 351W had the same kind of problem with the stock tremec shifter on it. By the time it wouldn't stay in reverse, I ended up having to replace the whole reverse cluster (was only ~$140 in 2002).

My problem was caused by the shift rod not being able to move all the way forward. The front of the fork was running into the case about 1/8" before reverse was fully engaged. Luckily, my Tremec came with a manual and it was pretty easy replacing the cluster and grinding the little bit off the fork so it would fully engage.

In your case, I'd stick the stock shifter back on it and take it to Ford.

I have the hurst shifter, no shifting problems. However have you checked all of the fasteners on the shifter? If they are all tight, then your problem is definitly internal.

Just remember, they don't have to prove anything since they can flat out refuse to service or repair the vehicle for any reason, despite the laws.

What do I mean by that?

The law means nothing except in a courtroom. That's where the burden of "proof" is on them.

Vehicle warranty laws can be ignored by the dealership. It's not until you hire a lawyer or take them to court that it all means something.

Just think about it for a second. If a dealer claims that your Hurst shifter is to blame, and they will not warranty your repair, what are you going to do about? There's nothing you can do, without spending a lot of money and/or time.

If you want your problem fixed without the hassle, then reinstall your old shifter before you go to the dealer. You might even find that it's the Hurst shifter causing your problems.
