No sound on aftermarket deck

I just put a JVC cd player in my '92 LX and for some reason there is no sound coming thru the speakers.
I hooked all the wires up right and the deck comes on and will tune stations and play a cd but theres no sound at all.

The factory deck works fine and all the speakers work.

What is the problem? Ive hooked up several stereos before with no trouble like this.

Does the car have a factory amp under the passenger's seat?

I would take some spare speaker wire and run it straight from the deck to a speaker first and see if you get any sound.

Is your amp the little black box behind the factory head unit bolted to the floor? I know it may sound dumb but that is where the factory amp was in my car. Hopefully thats it.

You could check the wires and make sure there is no bare wires that might be touching some metal. I had this problem in my old 84 ltd. I would hit a bump and bare wire would touch metal and cut out all the sound. I covered the wire and never looked back.

Ill try that tomorrow. I dont know why I didnt think of that earlier.

I didnt see anything behind the deck like that but Ill check again tomorrow. I put the tape deck back in to drive the car with a radio tonight.

I hooked up a spare speaker to the deck and it works. Im going to get new speakers and rewire them today. Theyre just crappy factory speakers anyway.

My car will still be slow but atleast it will have a good stereo.

Did you look again for that box? Im pretty sure all the stangs had one its just a matter of where it is.

There was nothing behind the deck in there.

I ended up getting all new Pioneer speakers and new speaker wires and it sounds great now. I actually put bigger speakers in the dash too- 4" instead of 3.5". I had to grind away at the dash a little to fit them but the grille covers it anyway.

It was pretty easy to rewire the speakers. I didnt really plan on getting all new speakers but they definately sound better than 14 year old factory garbage.

If my theory is correct, you've done the best thing you could have done, however, if there are any others out there with similiar problems, replacing the speakers may not have been "necessary". That being said, aftermarket speakers are definately leaps and bounds better than factory.

I would say since all the speakers quit working at once, there was a factory amp that was not getting powered correctly. On my 2.3LX it was a silver amp mounted to the tranny tunnel behind the radio, but it may be found in various places.

That being said, a factory amp isn't really beneficial to your sound system if you have an aftermarket deck, so wiring around the amp is many times the best alternative. By re-wiring the speakers, you've effectively done this. For anyone else who may want to attempt this, there is a slightly easier way, you should be able to get your wires at the factory amp to go to the speaker (amp outputs). Just check continuity from those wires to the ones at your speakers and run them to your aftermarket deck.

The only way to check this is to have PJB check the impedance between the positive and negative terminals on his speakers (should be 2-4 ohms), or connect a 9V battery to the two terminals on the speakers (should drive the speaker in or out). If either one causes a change, the speakers were good...for a factory speaker anyway...

Figured I'd throw out what little wisdom I have for anyone else.

I know you rewired everything already, but this is for people who may also find themselves in your situation......When I installed my aftermarket radio, I bypassed the factory amp, if you take glove box door off and look inside to the left, there is another connector in there that accepts the aftermarket connectors that you can buy from Best Buy, Circuit City, Crutchfield or where ever.

I've read in a couple of places that the amp may also be under the passenger seat. I had a 94 explorer that had a factory amp. When I bought a new deck crutchfield gave me a harness to bypass the amp b/c the deck provided more power than the amp.

I checked under the seat but not the glovebox.

I actually had the same problem with a Blazer I used to have but I had forgotten about that. One of the speakers on that truck needed rewiring because it worked with the factory deck but the aftermarket deck shut off (while driving one time). I rewired that speaker and they all worked again.

Ill check the glovebox later just to see though.

If I remember correctly it is tucked back towards the mid/upper left. I then pulled it down behind the radio
