I purchased a 65 mustang (289) about 6months ago. I have been starting it about every two weeks or so . I tried starting it yesterday and no go. It does not seem to be getting any spark. It just cranks and does not even sputter. I pulled a plug wire and could not see any spark. I pulled the coil wire and nothing. How do I go about finding what is wrong?? Thanks

A couple of quick checks to do. Take a volt meter and find the positive side of your coil. Check to see if you ar getting 12 volts to it with the key on in the run position. If you are then check your points to see if they are opening up and their condition. If they are ok you likely have a bad condensor or coil. If you arent getting 12 volts then trace that positive wire back to the start solenoid and check connections. If good give your solenoid a couple of smacks with the handle of a large srewdriver and try again. Or you can run a quick jumper wire from the positive side of the battery to the positive side of the coil and try to start it again. This bypasses the solenoid and tells you if thats your problem.

I am so glad I got rid of points, having to adjust those dam things was irritating. Its funny how you can start a car but just running a large piece of wire from the positive side of the battery to the postitive side of the coil. Also if you look at the spark plugs while starting the car, make sure that they are touching the engine block. Without grounding them you wont be able to see it spark.
