You know how some of us are having "normal" noises from our engines. Mostly from the knock tsb and the VCT. Well I noticed that after I changed over to M1 5w20 my engine started doing this.(3000 miles). Everyone here as some level of automotive knowledge would determine that changing to M1 5w20 should not have an effect on this. I'm going to change back to MC 5w20 and see if there is a difference. I don't think that this is going to make a difference. Also I realize that these engines are sort of noisy. Note having a lot of experience with Ford engines so we will see if this makes a difference. I got underneath the car today with a stethescope and could not find the location of the noise. I checked everything. Could not find the area that the noise was coming from. I noticed that it is noticable from the wheel wells. As described in the Valve TSB, but the noise comes and goes. Sometimes it's there on cold starts and sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it is there after the engine has warmed to operating temperature. There is a good oil website out there www.bobistheoilguy.com and some there with Ford Modular engines have had this same problem and have changed back to MC 5w20 and the problem with the noises has gone away. Also to the people that feel 5w20 is only for CAFE reasons. There is some true to that, but there is a thread on the site that requests that only people that have over 100K miles on there cars on a 5w20 diet to post. All have reported that their cars are still runing like new going 3K-5K oil changes using nothing but 5w20. Most of them have reported that having their oil tested (5w20) resulted in excellent reports back that show very low wear. Also some have shown that the MC5w20 out performed MC5w30.

There is a lot of misinformation floating around about MC 5W20.

MC 5W20 is made by Conoco. I don't know if it is still there but there was an excellent article about the 5W20 syn blend on the Conoco web site.

The primary reason for developing the 5W20 syn blend was to come up with an oil formulation that made catalytic converters last longer (new EPA requirements) while still providing more than adequate engine protection.

Because of the syn stock and lower VC enhancers, the 5W20 syn blend gives better engine protection than 5W30 conventional oils. EPA mileage is NOT the reason for the 5W20.
