Noisy Lifters/ Ford Racing tech Dept

Well as some of you know and others may not I have had lifter noise going on since I did a rebuild back in January. For those who dont this is what I have as far as valvetrain goes. Stock 302 block ,stock heads, Cranes beehive springs support 550 lift, ford racing roller lifters, trick flow pushrods, stock pedastal 1.6 steel rockers and a 303 F cam. I have tried it all and have not for my life been able to get rid of the lifter ticking. Its quiet at idle and gets noisy when you rev it up or drive it. So I finally after consulting witheveryone else decided to call Frod racing this morning and they said I will never get rid of that unless I put the stock cam back in it. They said as long as I have the F cam or larger in there it will always have the lifter noise.

Never heard that one, but I don't know much about valve trains.

The only thing that comes to mind is the pushrod length.
Did you measure this out, and get the correct length?

Also, the lifters and springs may not be 'stiff' enough for any rpm.
I'm just throwing out ideas at this point...

I am no expert in valve trains though... I am letting a pro grind my cam and specify lifters, rockers, etc.

yeah I have had my preload anywhere from .020 to .080 and it sounds the same

You know guys who do you listen to anymore now days. Ford tells me I am stuck with this noise. Crane says B/S buy some real lifters instead of those cheap ford racing stock lifters and you wont have any noise. I said well how much are they he says 525.00. He says they are the ones that have the bar attached to them. Another guy says remove the metal dog bones down in the lifter valley and buy the plastic ones that they started putting in the later 5.0 motors. Now those are only 70.00 for a set but whether its 70.00 or 525.00 its a lot of money to spend to say well that didn't do it. Now I just have another new part like my springs,retainers,keepers, 3 differen't length pushrods,lifters,rockers. I give up, : my 1973 lawnmower sounds better than this thing.

Man, i dont know about the lifter thing or not, I have never heard of that before and from what you state, its only towards the back of the motor. Is there any way the bottom of the rocker is hitting the valve retainer? I know they are stock rockers, but i have seen guys have to grind some off the rocker to clear the valve retainers. The lifters with the vertical bars are real expensive, i have them in my car. If you get the lifters with the vertical link bars, you can remove the spider in the lifter valley and the dogbones, i am not sure if any of those components are the source of your problem or not. I was not familiar with the lift numbers on the f-cam, but they are only .512. I thought maybe if the lift numbers were outrageous that the lifter could be getting pushed to far out of the bore and hitting the stop on the lifter, but there are guys running larger cams than that without a problem.

the frpp tech line is good, but not THAT good. I got completely bad advice at least once, .... was told I couldn't run roller rockers with speed density...boy were they wrong. Roller rockers won't effect vacuum one bit.

my bro runs a tfs cam with gt40 heads and roller rockers, and it's as silent as can be, my buddy runs a custom cam with afr heads, and although the roller rocker noise is very audible, there is no lifter noise.

I've talked to Steve about the car and noise on and off for quite a while now. Crane is full of crap and just trying to make a sale on the lifter comment. Typical Big Name, High Dollar Company with Minimum Wage Tech advisers. The stock ford 5.0s have some weak points but those lifters aren't one of them. Those things are tough. As far as the F-cam making noise no matter, I don't subscribe to that theory either. Steve, I ran across a post you made a while back that said you bought Proform rockers for it. I thought you said they were Scorpions or was this a different set you tried out?

I have scorpions. I was given a set of proforms from another guy and I tried them also but no such luck

Hey I don't have too much info but I have a systemax kit on my car with a Lunati cam and crane pedestal rockers and it is a little noisy but I still beat the **** out of it!! lol

I used proform 1.7's on my rebuild and took alot of time using the shim kit to get them spot on.I reached zero preload and then looked for torque at half turn.The motor is quiet at all rpm but has a slight sewing machine noise at idle,something you have to stand over the motor and listen for.

any updates? Did you find out the problem?

valve train tap

Did you find your problem? I also have the same concern and spoke to FRPP. The normal sewing machine noise is no problem but just off idle, 1200-1300 rpm it has a lifter tap and its driving me crazy. I have changed cams, comp and e cam, changed lifters and adjusted preload numerous times from 1/4 to 1 turn, I still have the problem. FRPP sugested the flow restricted push rods but we dedcied on a straight 40 wt oil to test ..no difference. This is a new motor stock block and afr 165 r heads. Changed pushrods and rocker arms twice for testing. Comp cam is quieter as sewing machine noise but no change in lifter tap above idle. Two oil pumps have been used and oil pressure was good on both?????????????????

I have had mixed reviews with bolt down rockers i have had sets from the same co. be quiet and the next time noisy. try taking some shim out from under it once remove .020 or so and try that. as far as the stock ford roller lifters we spin them in NMRA PS to 8,000 and above and they are tough as nails!

um, I have a simple solution. the stock ford hyd.roller doesn't need lash. why are you setting lash at .020???? ? ? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, tighten until seated, then 3/4 of a turn. you're done.

if it is set up for pedestal, dump it for adjustable
