hey my tranny is pretty noisy, so i can hear my synchros spin up to speed when i hold the shifter towards a gear.

Well when i shift hard, the tranny makes a short grind sound. It seems like its not getting enough time to synchronize itself, at least thats what i can gather.

It does it in 2nd, but its most noticable in 3rd and then it doesnt do it in 4th....

so does anyone have this little grind when shiftin hard???
just wondering if i should be ****ting my pants over it....

Mine's doing the same thing. Grinds second and fourth under hard shifts. I can also hear my synchros whine when forcing it into first or second when decelerating. My tranny whines, too. Three people have thought my car supercharged before.

Read your first post and think about it...

Grinding is bad, your tranny is hooped and you need a rebuild or better yet a new tranny... assuming your clutch is adjusted proporly.

T-5 rebuilds I have seen are 200-500+ bucks normally depending on wether or not they come with new gears.

Would it be much more to convert it to the T5Z gearset?

much more

sounds to me like your clutch might not be adjusted right foxfan. where does the pedal grab? it might not be your synchros that you hear winding up, it might be your throwout bearing, because i can hear the same thing you are talking about when i downshift slowly.

and also a misadjusted clutch would cause the grinding during hard shifts.

if your synchros were going out id think it would happen consistently in only a certain gear or gears.

good luck

i ran a grinding tranny like you describe for 2 years. i knew the syncros were gone but it wasn't like i couldn't get it into gear. finally changed it out because of the looks passengers were giving me.

My 93 t-5Z is grinding from 2-3 on high rpm's. At the track, that would be bad. But for now, I just wait a second for the tranny to spin down and then put it in third. Soon I am going to just add a TKO 500 and HD clutch system. Unfortunatly the wife is cinching the Cobra budget! I was told that on the t-5, if you have a 2-3 grind, you have to change the lower gear cluster. The guy told me $250 if I bring him the tranny. He is the Mech that sets up my gears. So you can get it cheap if you can find a small tranny shop with a race car mechanic.

well are there any write ups for clutch adjustment.

I have the stock cable, bbk FWA and about to put in a FRPP double hook alum quadrant....

right now i have the stock quadrant and pawl and when i press the clutch real hard it POPS and sticks to the floor.

So maybe this stock quadrant might be contributing to improper adjustment....

also here is something to add.

before i had my FWA, it had no piece there so the clutch was horrible.

and if i tried it then it would gind into second under a hard shift, and 3rd also.

since i got the FWA and its closer to proper adjustment, it only grinds under a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd.

doesnt do it in second anymore..... havent really got on it lately, but tonight i was driving fast a bit so i was listening for it.

also about the whining when holding the shifter next to a gear, the pitch of the whine changes, second will sound different than third,

that's because second has a different gear ratio than third.

get that damn quadrant. yes, your crappy factory pos isn't tightening up your clutch cable enough.

this same thing happens to both my foxes. one of them is most certainly not adjusted right, and beat as hell. the other has been babied for its entire 65,000 orig mile life. and the low mile car has a well adjusted clutch that grabs real quick. i have noticed that when the tranny's are cold they will do that same grind in 2nd&3rd even while granny shifting at low RPM's. i would argue that this is a sighn of bad sycros, because i know that my 65,000 mile car was not abused, i mean it was barely even driven.last owner=10,000 miles in six years.
oh yeh, they both whine pretty loud while cruising too, if im on my cell phone people always ask
"whats that noise". i dont remember if you said it was an automatic before but that will make it even louder because you probly had to cut a larger hole right? TRY A SYTHETIC OIL AND SEE IF IT HELPS IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY.

by the way i posted a comment in your other thread first before seeing this one

get your new quadrant on there and see what happens..........
where did you get your t-5 from??
you gotta remember buying these things used is a gamble, you either get hosed all together like i did once, or the tranny's worn......
unless your lucky these things cost you either way it seems sometimes, which is why my next attempt will be a new one....

I'm gonna run some Lucas transmission additive in mine and see if it makes a difference. I've got a friend with a Vortec 350 and a 5speed in a truck and he said it made a huge difference.
