Not running a Smog Pump, cool or not cool

My smog pump threw the pulley and will not turn. Is it safe to run the car without it, minus the apparent reason of being emissions legal? Is it possible to just get a smaller belt and take the smog pump off completely, and if so, does anyone know what belt I should get?

I don't know of the legality issues, but I know you can get a smog pump eliminator idler from 50resto.com so I'm guessing you can run just fine without it

My experience says its just fine to run without it and I allways do. Some will say that it will shorten the life of your cats if you still have them but I never run them so I cant say. Then others say it wont hurt the cats but will only increase emissions. As far as belt length, I have not found 2 to be exactly the same for some reason.

yes you can you will need a 84.5" belt if you have A/C...

A pump is like 35-40 bucks at the parts store - it's almost smarter money to get one than to get another belt (being it that you live in Cali).

Not Cool

Don't California State Troopers execute on site anyone who messes with their smog equipment?

I would either replace the pump OR pull the cats and install a idler pulley.

If your car does not suffer from a chronic rich condition and does not burn excessive amounts of oil, you may be just fine without the smog pump. (I think the smog pump is more for helping burn of unburned HCs?)

As Roland said, the AIR pump is hardly parasitic - go to the parts store and spin one by hand. Now go and spin your PS pump by hand (for comparison).

Jason, it does seem to me that the extra O2 is to allow further catalyzation of hydrocarbons, like you said.

Mine has been completely deleted. It is better to just get the kit from 5.0resto, Ive heard about issues of using the smaller belt it will save you a lot of trouble. Even better is keeping your smog system intact, It doesn't have any effect on the running part(unless there is a vac leak), it runs separate from the rest of the emmissions it is to simply clean up your exhaust reducing the nitrogen oxides that your machine puts out by pumping oxygen into it. If it would have been me, I would have kept the smog system, but some idiot who had it before me must have been a liberal idiot looking for hp gains, which there is none removing the smog pump except for weight (like 2.5 lbs.) I always smell exhaust fumes and it ****s in the air that we have to breathe so all in all its better just to keep it. If I ever get it running right again, Im putting that stuff back in.

Just to clarify...
Nitrogen Oxides are not reduced by the Air pump. Actually adding air (oxygen) would increase NOx. You may have been speaking of the EGR system?

I hope I don't come off as a jerk, I'm just trying to keep things clear.

Is history repeating itself? I don't know. But in the 80's when I moved to California, it was common for the 60's to 70's Mustangs (and every other car) you could buy to have the smog pumps and associated plumbing removed for performance reasons, only to have the smog Nazis flunk the cars at inspection. By then, the parts were hard to come by and expensive, and sent many cars to the junkyard just because they couldn't be made to pass smog for a reasonable price. Is today different? Again, I don't know. But based on my experience I would suck up the cost now to keep that stuff on the car if you plan to keep it. You may have a hard time replacing it later if you have to.
