...So it turns out that my car has 3 different VIN numbers. The body has one VIN, the dash has ANOTHER VIN, and the Motor and Tranny has a 3RD VIN...

\Now, to those that have to title thier car... which VIN IS the DMV supposed to go by? And does the FRAME have a VIN stamp on it? If so, where?

Since this discovery, I have re-named it FrankenStang. Appropriate, no?

Didn't you get a title when you bought the car? You would want to use the VIN number on the title. Personally, I think it is too messy to buy a car without a title, especially when these cars are so cheap already, so you can find the next guy who actually has a title for their car.

But when in doubt, it is probably your best bet to use the VIN number on the body, and confirm that with the DVM when you apply. I say that because the drive train and dash can be change, but the body generally stays.

See, that's the part that confuzzes me... the VIN on the DASH matches the title, but nothing else..

Body is a 92, dash (title) is 89, and engine/tranny are 91.

The dash VIN is the standard reference.

The title's relationship to the vehicle you have in your possession is solid. Even if the car isn't.

The last 8 digits of the VIN are stamped on tags that can only be seen when the fenders are removed completely on the tops of the rails. That would be a sure validation of the correct VIN.
