Okay, this has been bothering me ever since the 05 Mustang was introduced...

I can understand calling a Cat Back exhaust a Cat back exhaust because you really are replacing just about all of the exhaust system from the mid pipe back, which has the 4 cats on our cars. Here's my question...Does anyone else look at exhaust for the 05+ Stangs and see what they have listed as "Axle Back" and just see 2 mufflers? I mean come on, they are just 2 mufflers with pre installed tips. I guess the fancy name adds $$$

Sorry for the randomness, but as you can see, I am really bored right now.

Yeah, it has to do with the way that their exhaust is configured. In a way, it makes the acquisition cost for the owner a little less, and for most people, they could care less about the pipes, as they just want the different muffler sound. I mean, think about how many people just weld in Flowmasters onto their stock setup. It's just an easier way to accomplish the same thing, except the manufacturers are making that money instead of the muffler install shops.

If I remember right the 05 and up GT comes with 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust anyways dont they?? So theres not much of a need to replace the extra pipe

Nothing too different from the SN-95 prices, $450 or so for big name catted midpipe.

wouldn't make a difference if you bought a catback for the 05+ as the stock piping is 2.5" (i think) anyways. Axle back is cheaper and easier to install.

i think it is because it goes from the rear axle and back. thats the only reasons i would see them calling them that. thats what i first thought when i was looking at it.

I don't see it as being a fancy name as much as just being descriptive.

Other than aesthetic value, we really don't "need" a complete catback exhaust anyway. The stock tubing is more than adequate. Just buy mufflers and weld them in

I always hear the term "axle back" in the import world, i've never really heard it on the domestic scene until recently, I always thought that the Catback and Axle back where the same thing.....they both connect after midpipe correct?

Cat back connects to the mid pipe, and axle back connects after the mid
pipe, either welds or clamps on right before the muffler.
Axle back is just a new name for mufflers with tips ....
