So my mom gets a certified letter, for my Mustang, and another car we DON'T even own, or have in my driveway. Now, what I am trying to figure out.... is if I am rebuilding this Mustang, how can the City of Milford order me to remove it from my Drive-Way? I am going to go arrange a meeting, to argue it. Cause, they can have my mustang over my Dead body. I am sure as hell NOT going to let them have it.

ANd, to make things better.... I can't even find a copy of the City of Milford Odinances online (I just got this notice this evening, so I couldn't go to the city hall for a copy.) All I know is that it is Ordinance 14-41(a).....

I am so angry. This is not cool.
I think its the guy who owns a business behind my house, he once asked if I was selling my Mustang, I told him not a chance in hell (I meant it friendly) but he got angry. And hes in the past pulled **** with other people on my street, specially when he gets cited for something.

Many cities have ordinances about parking a car in the front of a house in the driveway, or for that matter, storing anything in the driveway, such as trailers, boats, etc. Most don't enforce this ordinance, but there are a few that do here in So Cal.

Haha! Tha twouldn't fly here in Georgia. To many homes here have no Garages or even Carports (like mine....) Plus, I still insist that the state flag of Georgia should be a Camaro on Blocks in front of a mobile home. That's how bad it is here.

To me the whole thing sounds like a property rights violation. It is your property, if it doesn't hurt anyone else why can't youdo what you want?

So I went to the City hall, talked to the ladies behind the counter....
They at first, told me I was completely wrong, and the letter had nothing to do with them.
After pointing out there Division name on it, they told me I had no reason to go in to the division... I pounted out the paragraph that said to appear in person, and THEN they tell me the lady who Served the notice, is on vacation for the next 3 weeks. And they told me to write her a letter.
My mother had the idea of getting one of those collapsable car garages, the tent things for cars. Any one have any experience with them? I figure its a good thing to have, but I just wondered if anyone could recomend someplace to get one at.

Before you spend money on one of those tent garages. You might want to check and see if they are legal. Most of the cities around here will let you put a car cover over the car if it can be seen. They frown on projects being in the front. I fought with one city on the carport/tent garage. I was wanting one in the back to park the car under. The city no way no kind. I meet with 6 building code people trying to solve this. NO. Period. If I put it up and they found it. $2k a day fine until it came down. Dont get pissed off, try and find the loop hole that will let you get around the problem. Good Luck!!

Not much room for a loop hole, the Ordinance 14-41(a) says, and I quote
"a owner of any parcel of land, wholly or partly within the city, shall deposit, or cause or permit to be deposited, or retain, or cause or permit to be retained, any abandoned, inoperable or unregistered motor vehicle on such land, except in a completely enclosed and secured area."

I am not sure I can get away with just a car cover. But I am going to do what the ladies said, mail the Zoning Enforcer, and see if she can work something out that will meet city code. Cause, if not... ill just push the car to a neighbors house, wait 30 days, push it back... and do that cycle over and over again if I have too.

Is it possible to build a fence with a gate? I assume that would be an enclosed area. At least for all intents and purposes. Find out what the purpose of the 'enclosed blah blah' is, that will give you ideas on how to deal with it.

After you get yours sorted, start calling the city about everything mr business behind you does wrong.

As a cop.... I have a little insight. However, I am not from your jurisdiction so this may or may not hold true (This is just advice):

Get a real good car cover.... the one with the cable through it so that it is secure. Cover the car and lock it. If you have crap tires on it change them (This is the only thing that is seeable under the car cover). Make sure they do not look old i.e. dry rotted or flat. Keep them pumped up and shine them too. Once a week roll the car one foot in any direction. Lock the car cover back up. Make sure you cannot pull up any of the corners to see the license plate area or read the VIN.

What you are doing is covering the vehicle in a secure location and making the vehicle look used. By moving the vehicle, if zoning chalks the tires (marks them to see if the vehicle moves) it will show that it does. If the car is in the cover they cannot see that the car is unregistered. They cannot make you remove the cover.... this falls under rights against improper search and seizure. Make them get a warrant for the search.

My neighbor has the same problem with an old vet. He followed my advice and it worked, it also made the neighbors happy because they didn't have to look at the rusting hulk of crap in the driveway anymore.

However, it is your responsibility to insure your car is not unsightly to the neighborhood. They can, under abetment laws actually impound the vehicle. It sucks but sometimes it is needed.

Some people out here put a couple potted plants in the trunk or on the package tray. That way it now becomes a planter. It's a debatable tatic. In mesa, i had someone slash the tires on my truck and 65 mustang. Before I got back from the tire store with new tires for the truck (and after i got the truck fixed, the mustang). We had 4 citations for $10k each for the mustang being inoperable. The City guy left the noticed on our door. They would not waive them when we told the inspector's supervisor what happened.

So we told the supervisor that since we have a no trespassing sign on our house, and the inspector placed the citations on our door we would file charges against the inspector for illlegally tresspassing. (the operating manual for the inspector state he has to mail the citations and not set foot on the property). The supervisor then waived the citations.

We had many other problems that we found solutions around. We had lived in the house 24 years with no problems up until the last 2 years. urg!

Two statements from the quote stand out to me, operable, and registered, if it's either of those then they (the powers that be) need shut up and leave you alone.

I'm not sure what state of work your car is in, but apparently it doesn't run by you saying you could push it to a friends house. When was the last time you had it tagged? Some ordinances (ohio's does) provide for a car of certain value or project vehicle being okayed, but when you get into to certain townships/neighborhoods they get a little more picky. If all else fails put tags on it, you may not be able to drive it, but you'll have a leg up on em.

plates for my 69 (which hasn't moved in 5 years) are 27.00 a year. That's a cheap solution if you ask me....

One of my co-workers has a 68 Dart, that he hasn't driven in over a decade, (former drag car) but keeps the registration current. What I don't understand is he has it in a garage at his house? He could get a "Certificate of non-operation" and then register it when it's ready to drive again.

On another note, there's a city here in SoCal that won't allow ANY cars parked overnight in the front of your house as well as on the street after 2a.m. till around 8 a.m. Makes for a quiet uncongested city, I guess.

A possible problem with getting new tags is his state may require a safety inspection (Missouri does). In which case, if it's not running, chances are it won't pass the ispection (plus inpsectors don't make house calls).

You might be right. I do notice old cars in the inspection line at the DMV once in awhile.

Very very useful info home it works for me because the city has come down on me right now on one of my projects that were in the driveway.

Now I understand why they didn't place an abatement paper on the car with a cover on it.

Would walking down a 50 foot driveway half way to the side of my house be considered tresspasing even if no actual gate is present. That's what the person had to do to place the paper on my cars window.
