NYC...what to go see??

i'm up in waldwick NJ right on the NY line for a funeral. i'm going to be up here all week and i want to check out some stuff since i havent been this far up since i was 10. i'm planning on hitting NYC and seeing the statue of liberty and the empire state building and hopefully make it to ground zero.
is there anywhere else i should check out while i'm here?

BTW i got to see some snow for the first time in YEARS, and it is fun! me and my brother drew a few donuts in the empty parking lots.

i'm hoping it snows more before we leave.

also all the NJ/NY guys, whats up with the red neon signs on the turnpike? it wasnt even snowing and they said reduce speed to 45?!?!? i was running with traffic doing about 75 and had no problems. do i really need to run that slow or is more of a safety precaution?

The Intrepid aircraft carrier is'nt too far from where ground zero is if I remember right. It's on the west side highway or whatever that road is.

My freind said one of the coolest things about NYC was seeing rats the size of a cat. He was serious too.

I'd definatly try to make ground zero and the Statue of Liberty.

Sorry about the circumstances you are up there for though.

Go the museum of natual history ,you can spend a whole day in that place . For food if you like Mexican food be sure and go to " Mexico Lindo" 26th street and 2nd avenue NYC great food and very good prices for a place in New York. China town is just a bit downtown of Mexico lindo good sight seeing experience. Also East Village, Little Italy {which is getting littler all the time} .Katz's deli on Houston street very famous used in many movies{orgasim scene Billy Crystal/MegRyan} for one. Feel like dressing up sport coat go to 21 club for cocktails .Main thing is have fun enjoy .

being that I live here I dont really do too much tourist stuff but like the poster above me said chinatown is always cool, especially during the day when all the little shops are open trying to sell everything outside.

I'm in NYC all the time... If you fancy different cultures then definitely go to Chinatown, and little Italy. Go to the village and check out some "different" tastes of life haha. DO NOT drive into the city b/c parking willl ikely be an issue unless it is a weekend(not a Sat. night though!)

You can try to visit the Statue of Liberty but thats kind of hard sometimes.

I cant think of anything right now haha, I gues I've lived here too long and it all just blended in...

If you like heights, check out the observation deck of the Empire State Building. It seemed alot more historic and definitely more intense than the glass enclosed top level of the WTC.

Central Park is pretty cool too, though you can't really sit around outside in January in NYC without freezing usually.

You can check out Ground Zero and Wall Street basically in one fell swoop.

Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and some of the other ecclectic neighborhoods are cool too.

Lastly, ride the subway. Until you've been flattened against the glass by an angry guy from Brooklyn or shoved out of the way by some old lady, you just ain't experiencing the Big Apple!

It depends on what your into...... whenever i feel like heading into the city its usually just to hit up the times square area..... too bad its the heart of winter and not much is going on in the car scene right now or I'd tell you some good places to come :/

as far as the ancient signs on the turnpike... as you said nobody listens to them and they will read false information for hours and hours ... a safety precaution i guess? usually speed limit there is 65... most traveling 75-80 ...

we went in yesterday morning. took the train from waldwick to hoboken and then took the subway into the city to 33rd.

went to the empire state building first. i was VERY happy we went there first. the view from the observation deck was awesome!!! i stayed in the freezing cold wind for about an hour just looking and taking pictures.

went to ground zero next. i saw some of the new construction and visited the 9-11 memorial. the memorial was very interesting and really kind of a somber place. you really got the feel of what happened to all of those people who lost their lives that day.

after that we went to battery park and took the ferry to libetry island. i sat up top in the bitter cold but it was a great view. we ate lunch on the island and then climbed the 999,999,999 stairs to the top of the statues base. if you ever go to the statue TAKE THE ELEVATOR!! we ended up spending a few hours there and couldnt make it to ellis island.

then we caught a cab with "the happy cabby" who took us to china town. i was looking for a coach bag for my wife and was hustled into this small hidden room in one of the shops. they had the door rigged up where it wouldnt open unless you hit a hidden button. i ended up getting 2 of the purses for $60. i hope they are the ones she wanted b/c i had no idea what i was looking at.

after all that we took the subway back to the jersey train line and back to the house. got some great pizza and hit the road.

Take the Subway (A,B,C ?) to downtown Brooklyn (Court St., Jay ST ?). Walk West thru Brooklyn Heights to the water's edge. There is a promenade there with benches, etc. - and you can gaze from there to
the Manhattan Side. Great View.

Then, find the Brooklyn Bridge. You can see it from the promenade. You can walk on the upper level of the bridge towards Manhattan. An unforgettable sight, believe me. Or don't - check out www://http:yelp.com.

awesome to see your pics man. esp the ones of ground zero that is the only reason I could will myself to be in that much city. Im sure it was quite a feeling being at the site of such tragedy.

I'm taking the family there this summer. Probably stay a few days then go down to DC for a few days. What were some of the things you would avoid with a family?
