Octane for 01 cobra

Found a used 01 cobra, might buy it. Please settle an arguement: Can an 01 cobra be run safely with Mid-grade or even regular unleaded gas. I say no, My brother says it doesn't matter. I know you guys can settle this

I would go with whats recomended or higher... My 03 states clearly that it requires premium, and I woudlnt' risk messing anything up/deteriating performance over saving like 10cents a gal... but hey.. to each their own

If it says "premium fuel only" Thats what it means.... nuff said

Sure you can put regular or medium grade in it, as long you drive like granny, stay off the gas pedal, and don't care about damaging the engine long term.


9.85:1 Compression = Premium Only

92 octane and up and nothing less

Exactly. High compression, high hp motors need premium fuel. The higher the octane, the slower the burn, which keeps cylinders cooler, reducing the possiblity of detonation. While this isn't as important as it is with s/c motors, it is still important none the less.

92 Octane or higher!!!!

Just to give you an idea, I'm running 94 octane with 2 gallons of race gas mixed in for added safety on my s/c motor.

91 OR HIGHER on normal driving. 93 minimun at the track. CAM2 on NOS!

I own an 01 Cobra.....Book says Premium Only. That's all I ever used. Use anything less, just trade her in for a ricer

Like I mentioned above, I only use premium myself, but just curruios, where do you find the higher octane racing fuels at?? in my area, all the stations seem to have the normal, with 91 being the std. high octane... are you getting higher with additives, or am I just hitting up the wrong stations? (btw.. I live in northern virginia if that helps...)

I'm in Michigan....standard is 92/93 around here. Sunoco offers the 94 Octane (which would be overkill for a mildly modded Cobra). They also offer race gas....110 Leaded octane. You can't have cats if you run this gas. Also, it will mess up your oxygen sensors after awhile. My tuner recommended I run a little of this with my 94 Octane to be extra safe. This race gas is actually taking away a little power from me since the car wasn't tuned with it in the car. Remember, slower burn...but the slower burn is keeping my cylinders cooler and preventing detonation. So if you ran it in your car you would make less power...and it would cost you $4 a gallon.

Simply put the 91 premium you can get in the car and you will be fine. I wouldn't bother with fuel additives as you won't even increase the overall octane rating by 1 point...this will cost you around $2-$4 a fill up as well. Anything other than the 91 you can get is overkill until you really mod up your car.

actually thats awesome, thank you for sharing, I was mis-informed in thinking that more octane=better. I have been running 91 in mine and had intended on never using less then that, but I am glad to see that I am not really missing out on anything by not using higher... thanks for the responce... Appreicate it!!

The only thing to say about using higher octane gas is that during the summer on hot days, unfortuately mine will ping lightly under load. Perhaps light pinging will not really do significant damage in these conditions unless they exist for extended periods of time. Still, I hate to hear it and the concern that the Ford fix for it is not sufficient, I found a place that sells unleaded 100 and pumped a gallon in with about 8 gallons of premium and the ping goes away. The octane boosters haven't worked for me in these cases.
