Whats the best way to fill the tranny? My 5 gear sounds like crap I might try changing to that Red Line ATF can you buy it at any auto place?

I see people filling it through the shifter after pulling the fill plug off.

Where is the fill plug located

I believe it is located about 3 to 4 inches above the drain plug on right side of trans.

you can fill the tranny from the shift top. Makes filling it alot easier.

I only have 2 problems with my tranny, kinda notchy to shift, but if the clutch is all the way to the floor, it shifts very nicely, makes me think the clutch engagement needs tweaking, and grinds going into reverse. Gonna start trying the 1st reverse thing

When I changed the fluid in my tranny, I put in Castrol Syn-tork. I didn't use ATF. That stuff is way to thin. Gears need gear oil.

I'll agree. I had an '87 Ranger Pick-Up and learned that trick('92-'98). Traded it in for a '98 new Ranger with Automatic tranny('98-'07). Traded that in for my current '02 GT, same thing-first to reverse! (braught back old memories ) After starting release the clutch and reapply clutch, first to reverse-works everytime!

I've been doing that trick without even realizing it. Anytime it won't go into reverse I put it in 1st and then back, works everytime. Good to know the why of it now.
I've had my car for a year now and went from 48K to 54K and still have no tranny issues other than the crappy 2-3 shift. <Knocks on wood>

Well guess i'm a lucky one.

'03 GT. 57K miles

Had the clunk when it was new. Over time, its gradually gone away to the point where I don't even remember the issue now. Never had the TSB done.

Oh and i don't have to go into a forward gear before going into reverse. The reverse synchro works fine on my trans

2007 Mustang GT, less than 6k miles. I have no issues going into reverse gear or doing cold 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. I have slightly less than 3 quarts of Redline High Temp ATF in my 3650.

Just got the car back after doing the TSB. They said most of what I was feeling was not so much the pre TSB problems, but very loose mainshaft gears. Not done breaking it in, but so good its still a ton better than before. Ill give another update when its broken in.

I surfed on this thread and i did not find the information i need. My friend have a 03 with a 3650 and 25000 mile , the third gear wont engage in higher than 3000 rpm, the dealer change the 3-4 syncro , interlock , 3-4 slider and bearing, the problem still there , he was use the stock shifter.

Should he do the TSB about grinding 2 and 3 gear

Thanks for your help

I had problems with synchros grinding and very notchy shifts and dwonshifts were like do not even try it after awhile. This however was in a Mazda MX6 V6 5spd. Before you rip me I am looking to get back into the stand thing and noticed this on a 97 Cobra I test drove awhile back and have heard this and trying to figure out what year did not have problems. In reading this thread it reminde me of my problem with the Mazda. I bought the trans used an thought I got screwed. Then I read some on an MX6 site about how they had to run GL4 fluid and i had put in a Synthetic GL5. They suggested Redline MTL90 and 1 quart of MTL 75-90. Well this thing was buttery smooth like brand new. I could not believe it and was I ever relieved. FWD trans changed are a biotch on comparison. Try this in your 3650's it may work!

I'm having some weird problems with my t-3650 trans as well and figured id ask and see if you all have the same problem or could tell me what it is. After moving in first gear I can push in the clutch and it sounds like the transmission keeps spinning(making a spinning and thumping noise), hard to describe but when I try to put it back in first gear I can feel the shifter bouncing off of something until I just shove it in gear. The trans is very noisy as well and I have shifter gaskets. I have Mobil 1 synthetic atf in it now but I'm thinking about changing to something different. Thanks guys

hey everyone, just wanted to put my .2 cents on this issue. I have also noticed some notchy and sometimes a grind when cold. my trans has 30k on it. My solution to the problem is to double clutch when its cold for 1-2 shift and avoid the grind and notchiness all together. Once it is warmed up it shifts fine. As for reverse i have not had a single grind even if i don't put the shifter in a forward gear first. My old 5.0's would always grind going into reverse. Overall I still love my cobra even though i need to wait for her to wake up when its cold.

You all want to hear all the sounds my t-3650 makes? I recorded this a couple days ago. Don't laugh at my left handed shift, I was holding the camera with my right hand. Video of my noisy t-3650 - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I wish I would have read this before I bought my car. I've got a 2004 GT that had 38K on the clock when I bought it. It will not go into second without a double clutch below 45 degrees or so and grinds second off and on after the tranny is warm. I live 1.5 miles from work so every time I drive the car I deal with this crap. I've resorted to taking off in second most of the time. I bought it in the tail end of last summer and never noticed the problem while test driving. I've found myself driving my old Taurus instead of fighting the trans in the Mustang on cold days. I'm highly disappointed to say the least. I'll try swapping the fluid in the next few weeks when I change the engine oil to see if that makes a difference.

If you are referring to the ever-popular 1 to 2 cold clunk or lash, no.
